McCain: "Anybody who says Bush is lying is lying"
Bush's Troubles Weigh Heavily as Republicans Meet to Showcase Candidates
By ADAM NAGOURNEY

MEMPHIS, March 11 — Republicans gathered here this weekend acutely concerned with the elections ahead and distressed by the White House's performance since President Bush's re-election. They listened as a parade of prospective presidential candidates wrestled with how much to associate their campaigns with an increasingly unpopular sitting president.

< snip >

Senator John McCain of Arizona offered a full-fledged embrace of a president he has quarreled with over the years — Mr. Bush defeated him for the presidential nomination in a memorably acrid campaign in 2000 — as he urged Republicans to rally around Mr. Bush in a difficult time, and focus on the midterm elections ahead. "We must keep our presidential ambitions a distant second to standing with the president of the United States," he said...

Mr. McCain went so far as to condemn the collapse of the port deal, saying that Congress had served Mr. Bush poorly by not permitting a 45-day review of security concerns to proceed, though he did not mention that the deal was sunk by fellow Republicans. "The president deserved better," Mr. McCain said.

Mr. McCain praised the president for his failed effort to rewrite the nation's Social Security system, said he supported the decision to go into Iraq and blistered critics who suggested the White House had fabricated or exaggerated evidence of unconventional weapons in Iraq in order to justify the invasion. "Anybody who says the president of the United States is lying about weapons of mass destruction is lying," Mr. McCain said...

20. It would seem to me that he has made a deal with the devil!!!
All of that sweaty hugging and cake-eating, and now this!

Whaddaya wanna bet that McCain actually believes that Bush will put his political machine behind McCain in his quest for the nom?

He should think back to his Adventures In Carolina vis a vis BushCo, and then remember the words of the Dullard Monkey: Fool me once, unnnnnnh, shame on you. Fool me twice....unnnh, hmmmm, uhhhhh....won't git fooled agin!!!

57. Seems like McCain's star is rising
Johnny's enemies, like Ralph Reed, Grover Norquist, the Christofacists, et al, seem to be getting caught up in Abramoffgate or some other scandal. This supposed "moderate" and champion of campaign finance "reform" could very well be the heir-apparent when Cheney steps down for "health" reasons.

24. I liked McCain in '99, but those were simpler times
Rolling Stone Magazine did a big bio at the time on his campaign, his years in Hanoi, and the road that led to the 2000 election.

They focused on his "straight talk express" and I remember his quote something like: "I won't always tell you good news, I won't tell people what they want to hear, but I'll always tell you the truth".

After reading that I was hopeful he would beat Buxh in the primarys and become the Repub candidate against Gore. I figured America would do well either way.

We all know how that went, but since then his true colors have shown through.

It's obvious his fabricated integrity right went out the window by 2001, and now he's just another lying republican.

60. McCain hypocrisy: The Bushification of John McCain
McCain hypocrisy:

The Bushification of John McCain

By Ari Melber, AlterNet. Posted November 15, 2005.

The bad blood between the two men has been infamous since 2000, when Bush's campaign lied about McCain's family and war service, and McCain told Bush to "get out of the gutter."

But during Bush's reelection in 2004, McCain strained to embrace his former rival -- literally. In their first joint appearance, they hugged dramatically before 6,000 soldiers at a Fort Lewis rally. Those events made for great campaign visuals. Yet while most Americans saw McCain's big heart, Republican leaders saw hungry ambition.

Rich Lowry, editor of the conservative magazine National Review, recently described that campaign bear hug as nothing but proof of "the senator's presidential ambitions." Lowry argues it's just part of McCain's scheme to get "the Right to stop loathing him." In targeted moves since the election, McCain has continued his Bushification by changing positions on conservative priorities like creationism, gay marriage and tax cuts.

As the costs of Hurricane Katrina mounted, McCain went on national television and told Chris Mathews the Bush tax cuts must be maintained. But McCain voted against those tax cuts.

In fact, he was one of only two Republicans to oppose Bush's signature 2001 tax cut. Given the surging costs of Katrina, Iraq and Medicare, there is no policy rationale for reversing his position now. The only rationale is political pandering. And that's exactly how some influential conservatives see it. Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, recently said that although McCain has "flip-flopped on a number of issues," he is still "anti-taxpayer" because "he's voted against every tax cut."

Yet the mainstream media is so attached to McCain's maverick image, most journalists didn't cover the tax reversal.

62. So I guess that little dark girl in your house is actuall YOUR LOVE CHILD
and was not adopted from Mother Theresa, eh?

You let those bastards do THAT to you, to put flyers calling your wife a drug addict on cars in CHURCH parking lots before the primary, and NOW you hug Bush with those arms broken by the same people who BROKE YOUR MIND, according to the Rove Whisper campaign, and you FEED him his Marie Antoinette CAKE while all those poor bastards got Parboiled in their attics..

I want to find that footage of McCAin saying that AMERICA IS A FOUL BEAST and showing his Yellow streak, and make them publicly availible 24/7..

He actually layed there in his bed on camera and called America a Devil Nation, etc..

I think they DID break your mind, and if you have no problem lying then I have no problem showing the films where you are ACTIVELY a TRAITOR to your own country.

65. How sad, John McCain now lying for Bush
He knows this is not true; and he is surely calling a lot of people liars. He may need these same people to vote for him in the event he runs for president. I don't care for him very much anymore. He has quit being his own man. :spank:

67. No matter how much he panders to the Far Far Far Right in his public
words for the president, McCain has lost all credibility for me. I'm not saying he's not electable; he is. Unfortunately. But his once-fresh image as a straight-shooting truth-teller is long gone.

If you have to bend that far over for the Far Far Right, my guess is you're not going to enjoy the ensuing experience much.

Shame on John McCain.

72. well, there goes the last mote of sympathy i've had for him...
any respect was lost ages ago. but deep down, in the depths of my liberal bleeding heart, i retained mere flecks of sympathy for the man. who knows what blackmail was in the works, what do i know of the pressure being exerted on him? and now those last flecks are gone. i wash my hands of him. whatever he says from now on holds no interest to me for i shall automatically assume it to be a lie.

goodbye mccain, you served america pitifully in its darkest hours.

74. Anybody who says McCain isn't lying is lying.
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 01:04 AM by Cleita
His word is no longer credible because of the lies he has told in defending Bush.

77. The torture in Vietnam has finally destroyed his brain entirely.
What is it about politics, that makes a man sell his soul and those of anyone standing near?
