I feel sorry for Franklin Pierce; he was a tragic human being. Struggled with alcoholism; best friends with Nathaniel Hawthorne. His wife Jane hated politics, and was frail and withdrawn. They saw their only son killed in a train accident on the way to the inauguration and Jane thought it was God's judgment on Franklin's vanity. Awful stuff. Bad things happen to presidents - Jackson's wife, Pierce's son, Lincoln's son Willie, the Kennedys, and on and on. But not to Bush. May he remain so fortunate. I have seen too much in my lifetime, I guess.
