In Rocky Mountain West , Bush's rating lower than a rattlesnake's belly

<snip>
Here in the “purple states” of the Rocky Mountain West, President George W. Bush’s job approval ratings have fallen lower than a rattlesnake’s belly. In five of our eight mountain states, Bush approval has sunk well below 50 percent with his standing in Nevada at an all-time low of 39 and Montana at a rock-bottom 42 percent. Even in the most crimson, conservative states in America—Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho—the President’s 2004 election night approval has now collapsed by an average of 10 percent with a dizzying loss of 14 percent in Vice President Cheney’s home state of Wyoming.

It has become clear that the buyer’s remorse here in the Rockies is due to more than simple disagreement with Bush’s policies. Westerns have developed serious doubts about Bush’s judgment and character as well.

A look at westerner’s disagreement with Bush policy shows this: most Americans, 70 percent, disagree with allowing the United Arab Emirates to operate six critical American ports; so do we westerners. Americans, by 52 percent in the latest polls, oppose presidential telephone wiretaps without a warrant. In the West the disapproval of such unauthorized snooping is even higher. We, along with other Americans—by a whopping 60 percent—disapprove of how Bush is handling the overall energy situation. We are overwhelmingly opposed to Bush’s relentless efforts to push roads into our last wild places and westerners are also fighting the President’s effort to sell those public lands.

It is the President’s handling of Iraq, however, that is at the heart of the public’s disapproval. What is remarkable about the latest polls is that Bush is losing support, for the first time in five years, in his strongest base-Republican stalwarts, many of whom live here in the Rockies. More than a third of those who most likely voted for Bush in both 2000 and 2004 now disagree with the war in Iraq. Independents, who narrowly voted for Bush in 2004, disapprove of the way he has handled Iraq by a whopping 69 percent.

2. "A rattlesnake's belly" is pretty low indeed, and it's the right animal
to invoke to discuss this president.

A poisonous, sidewinding son-of-a-snoop.

Dubya deserves his low scores in these polls. I'm happy that some of the western states might harbor new doubts on the idiot's judgment.

3. Idahoans are outraged at W's intent to sell our public lands
Our one D.C. rep, Otter came out in favor of it, but quickly withdrew his support because of its lack of popularity and the outcry.

Wages are not getting better in the west and people can see no progress in the war in Iraq.

In an average Idaho newspaper, less than 20% of LTTE's defend W.

5. These folks need to understand that booosh did not get here
by himself. There is ample proof that rottenness is so endemic to the GOP that none of them should be trusted in positions of real authority, especially with a supportive network.

6. Even here in crimson So. Utah the grumbling is becoming audible.
And what was once a crimson red is beginning to turn into more of a blushing red. Hence my bumpersticker, "Hey Bush Supporter, Embarassed Yet?"

8. Well, 5 yrs ago they loved the SOB, so I say "eff them."
They're getting it up the ass now, esp all the farmers who voted on "moral" issues, and I can't say I am sorry for any of them. I hope they choke on it.

9. Reminds me of Cronauer imitating Cronkite in "Good Morning, Vietnam!"
Adrian Cronauer (imitating Walter Cronkite): "I just want to begin by saying to Roosevelt E. Roosevelt, what it is, what it shall be, what it was. The weather out there today is hot and shitty with continued hot and shitty in the afternoon. Tomorrow a chance of continued crappy with a pissy weather front coming down from the north. Basically, it's hotter than a snake's ass in a wagon rut."

Robin Williams, Good Morning, Vietnam!

In itself, a fairly good metaphor for the Bu$h regime. The rattlesnake's ass is getting hot and shaky. That's when the little bastard is dangerous.

11. Bush's environmental missteps bite back
"We are overwhelmingly opposed to Bush’s relentless efforts to push roads into our last wild places and westerners are also fighting the President’s effort to sell those public lands."

That's great to hear. One important thing to know about folks in the Mountain States (as I've come to learn), is that even though the GOP is dominant out there, people have a refreshing pro-environmental stance, among hunters and fishers and the public at large. Folks in the West are fine with Republicans who respect the land and the forests, and especially those who respect the national parks, but they become incensed at corporatist Republicans who open up the region's natural beauty to developers. That's one reason why Brian Schweitzer won in Montana. Something to keep in mind for own Congressional campaigns in 2006.

13. Thanks for this post! Last state figures that were posted here on DU
showed Utah at something like 70% for Chimp, with Arizona and Montana not far behind.

I thought they loved him because of the "ranchers" rights. Or some such thing. Also thought they loved that tough guy image of raping and plundering for mineral rights they could privatize.

hmmmm
