Kinsey
We just watched it on HBO and as the head of the Rockefeller Foundation was dragged in front of a Senate Committee, as J. Edgar Hoover wanted Kinsey to "find" homosexuals in governement... we could not help but thinking that if a Kinsey did the same research today and published his books, the reaction would be the same. It is as if the second half of the 20th Century was obliterated in this country. Some would like to increase this obliteration all the way to the New Deal.

1. Hoover wanted to "out" gays in gov't? That's funny, as Hoover was gay.

2. As was Ray Cohn. Those closeted gays were the worst
homophobics in public

9. And...
...to make it worse, he was Jew that exposed other Jews, when Jews were associated with communists and blacklisted from jobs.

When people ask me to define "self-loathing," I usually say; "two words: Roy Cohn!"

5. The reaction would be worse.
I was born in the mid fifties, that's my context. And, if Kinsey tried to publish today, he'd be pilloried.

This country has been driven hard to the right. Not even the right, just driven hard into fascism. I miss real Republicans. Richard Nixon was more liberal than many mainstream Democrats are today.

This is your country on drugs.

8. bs. 'controversial' sex books are published every day...
...in the US and no one is hauled before Congress.

Would 'Family Groups' protest. Yes, and they do now. Big whoop.

Get some perspective.

11. Minnesota is now considering a law allowing pharmacists to refuse
birth control pills.

As far as I remember, birth control pills preventing ovulation. So there is no "potential life" there.

After more than 40 years of wide spread use of the pill now the pharmacists have questions? Pharmacists, and nurses, are expected to follow doctor's directions unless, of course, the doctor is impaired and clearly should not practice medicine.

If they have problem with that, they should find a different vocation. I've heard there is a severe shortage of truck drivers.

This IS worse because we have come so far ahead, because we know so much today about human sexuality. Perhaps one could understood some of the reaction then because it was so new and broke so many taboos and conventional acceptance.

15. Kinsey didn't only publish a controversial "sex book"
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 03:00 PM by sfexpat2000
He founded a whole field of study and turned most of what we believed about sexuality, up to and including Dr. Freud, on its head.

And, he was excoriated.

I can't see him getting tenure and funding in Bushworld.
