I survived a week-end visit from my fundie parents.
:banghead:

Lot's of biting my tongue as the "N" word was used very liberally. I spent a lot of time correcting their misperceptions and Faux news implanted lies. I did a lot of explaining that the Democrats do have some actual plans that will make their lives better. Especially for health care and prescriptions.

I was talking about how I refuse to walk into walmart, and my dad said that Costco was owned by the Chinese Army!:wtf: I had to ask for his source on this information, but he couldn't remember. I explained that I've done a lot of reading on Costco, and it seemed like a pretty good company to me, especially after the attacks the Wall Street Journal's editorial pages have made on them. I did a google, and found out it originally came from Lou Dobbs, and that he was talking about COSCO (Chinese Overseas Shipping Company) who operates the ports in California. I checked out a few right wing loon sites, and they were just as confused as he is.

 :silly:

The best part came last night after dinner, and I'd had a few cocktails. He was talking about his sisters grand-daughter, who had graduated from Bob Jones University, and failed several times to pass the Delaware Veterinary License test, and is now working at Wal-Mart. I asked him why she kept failing. He said "I guess she's just too dumb". I replied, that I don't think that Bob Jones University is accredited in much of anything. He said the only reason that they're not accredited is, that they refuse to teach evolution, but teach creationism instead. I replied that that was too bad, because if she had spent that money in a good school, she would have learned that Darwins theory of natural selection was the bedrock of all modern medicine, and she could probably be pursuing her dream today, if it weren't for crazy ideas.

He went to bed, and I made them a nice breakfast, and sent them on their way.

1. She went to Vet school and ended up
working at Wal-Mart? That sounds like some kind of cruel joke.

3. I feel sorry for her, she was duped.
She was taken for a ride by this school. I find this a scandal. What happens to other graduates?

23. Sorry - there IS no veterinary school at BJU. There are 25 in the US,
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 09:11 PM by kestrel91316
and they are ALL at prestigious mainstream universities.

Auburn
Tuskegee
Tufts
UC Davis
Colorado State Univ
Washington State Univ/Oregon State Univ
Kansas State univ
Iowa State Univ
Cornell
Minnesota
Wisconsin-Madison
Florida State
Texas A & M
Virginia
Penn State
Ohio State
Purdue
Oklahoma State
Somewhere in IL??
NC State??
Missouri

Running out of ideas - have missed a couple here, but there are NONE at BJU, lol!!!!!!! What an insult.

On edit: perhaps the person was confused, and the girl studied in a veterinary ASSISTANT/TECHNICIAN program. That's one hell of a long way from being even remotely qualified to be a vet.

BTW: you cannot even sign up to take a state veterinary board exam without a diploma showing you received a doctorate in veterinary medicine from an accredited veterinary school.

26. Thank You.
As a new member I did not know how to bring up this fact without insulting the OP.
There are pre-veterinary courses at BJU I believe.

4. oh man! sounds like a john waters weekend
I have relatives like that - I just press my mental "record" button, and laugh at it all later. A little color in your life is better than no color at all.

In fact, you should have put on a John Waters video or something. I vote Pecker.

.....but you did good though. At least they've got tidbits of the truth now. Keep at them and next time deal with Iraq, PNAC, and Iran.

12. I went through all of that.
I think my dad just got more confused. He's 77 years old, and was a Goldwater Republican. At least I convinced him not to vote anymore. At least he won't be doing any harm.

to vote...So I was a dumb kid...and did it to some extent because I had 'talked' with him personally on amateur radio a few times. But the "conservatives" who pollute the body politic nowadays are nothing like AuH2O...

edit: dumb spelling mistake

and makes them read NYT. I know, not exactly the most liberal sources, but it rocks their little world.

But it becomes easier to handle because it gets kind of funny.

19. I'm not so sure about that. My mom was a Repub for 70 years
(she's 90 now and still pretty damn sharp...absolutely HATES Bushco.)

I think losing $200,000 in Enron stocks might have been a factor, though.

20. Democrats should always have to show what their plan is. I think we
should just respond with - We are still LIBERALS, but how can you possible call yourselves CONSERVATIVES - so exactly what is your plan - to bankrupt the country?

21. Used to argue with my fundie Mom -
I used to compromise -- if Mom preached at me I would remind her about God's disappointment in her ability to sustain a relationship (she had been married three times, divorced twice). If she told me I was going to Hell for whatever the sin-of-the-moment was, then I reminded her about God's concerns for temperance, self control, etc. and told her she seemed headed that way as well (Mom was a big lady who never met a chicken leg she didn't like). Most fundies don't like the Bible thrown right back at them! I told her she had created a monster by raising me in all that sh*t, because I learned it! Eventually we found plenty of other things we could talk about and actually ended up enjoying one another's company.

You know, I would give anything to have her around to argue with now. Somehow I think we might find better things to do. It is hard when you are in the middle of things to see what is and isn't important. I know, I have been there with the crazy talk and the over-the-top opinions ( and I am not only a hopeless liberal but a heathen homosexual, too, so just imagine) and I am not downplaying your frustration one bit -- just suggesting next time you try to find common ground and work from there. You cannot change their minds (especially when they appear to have been using them less and less frequently) but you will lose yours trying to make them see through the fog of the WTF ideas and beliefs.

Now go have a drink and pop in Fahrenheit 9-11. You need a strong dose of liberal-think to exorcise the demons from your home...

24. Welcome to DU arkansas liberal...
I'm an Arkansas liberal too! Nice to have you on board. I especially appreciate your nice post here. I am taking care of my elderly folks (83 and 85 now). They are Dems and non-fundy so that makes life sweeter, but I can imagine how difficult it would be to deal with them if they were otherwise. Sounds like you met a tough challenge and made the very best of it. Great to have you around... looking forward to more of your posts! :)
