Port foes' chance to mitigate terror misses the boat
Editor, The Times:
I am saddened at the collapse of the Dubai port deal <"Dubai port deal off; Arab firm will sell its U.S. operations," Times page one, March 10>. This was the first time that President Bush's strategy in the war on terror has been rebuffed.
The president has such fine instincts that he seems almost supernaturally inspired. The country has been greatly blessed during his gentle and wise stewardship despite the many who would rain on his parade.Killing this deal might mark a turning point in the war on terror. Our greatest strength has been our good will, confidence, decency and willingness to sacrifice that others might enjoy a better life. This is what is actually winning in Iraq slowly and inevitably.
Bush wants to befriend and positively engage the Muslim world and make pariahs of the Islamists. He embodies a confident America willing to take risks to pursue a vision of a family of nations. This Dubai vote makes this effort more difficult. It shows us as small, frightened and irrational. There was nothing wrong with this deal. This is a major setback. No wonder Bush is upset.
Maybe a defensive Fortress America can win the war on terror but I think not.

Knight blocks retreat
For every crisis in the world, a leader has stepped forward to answer the call. George Bush has been especially equipped with the proper tools of temperament to deal with the situation. Charlemagne, Alexander the Great and Scotland's William Wallace, are examples. George Washington set the moral, stable groundwork for America.Abraham Lincoln gave us the long-range planning that saved a race of people and made them free.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave us hope that there would be food on the table tomorrow. He also was in charge of the greatest war on Earth, yet was personally against war.
Ronald Reagan freed millions of other Europeans. Their nations are our present-day allies in the war on terrorism.
Each was a conquest over great enemies, starvation, and different types of enemies, i.e., Nazism, communism, and now the new war on terrorism.
It took many years to oust Hitler, and many years through the Cold War to end communism. Do you really think the war on terrorism will end swiftly because politically you desire it? Or because you want to crucify Bush with it?
Bush's temperament is the same moral foundation of ending terrorism in the world to make it safer for the future.— Grace Hofer, Bothell
