with hospital privilages at three large hospitals here in Florida and no, the planning is way behind. If we did have a pandemic and staff were using disposable n95 masks and ppe the correct way they would be gone in no time. The government is actually trying to find out if these masks(n95) can be used in a more extended fashion and the answer after the study is no. Surgical masks would of course be useless.They expect to be overwhelmed almost immediately if it happens.

Meanwhile, I am stocking my husband up for his office and staff.
I have a lot of friends I used to work with who are still nursing and they are worried as they don't want to

Dr Webster said the other day he thinks it is a fifty fifty chance either way it will go pandemic. If it does there won't be time to prepare so I'll spend a bit for some supplies for his practice and we can always use them anyway if it doesn't happen. Regardless it will end up endemic in birds here and there will be isolated bird to human cases around for a good while to deal with even if it does not make the jump to H-H

It gives me the illusion of control to prepare. Just like hurricanes. I prepare every year and never had to use my preps till we got hit with three in six weeks two years ago. The stores were empty and no gas available and no power but I Cruised through the whole mess with all I needed. :)

I think that is what makes it more urgent than the other diseases you mention. This would devastate the worlds economy and be hell on earth. Virologists all over the world are saying similar things. I have watched this thing like a hawk for the past year.

JAMA and the Lancet have had some good articles recently describing the sx of the people who are getting it now from birds and we are talking ARDS, DIC,cytokine storm, cavitations in the lungs of survivors, etc. The patients present with wacked out bloodwork and fever and it goes downhill for most from there and most need ventilator care for an extended amt of time to survive if they do. There are several strains in play of this virus too. The one in Indonesia right now has a high death rate.Personal experience doesn't mean much unless you lived in 1918 which had a similar sx set as this flu.We haven't seen anything like it since then.

AIDS and Hep C are real problems though chronic in nature and I am not sure what it has to do with this subject. They are also problems to be dealt with but would be dwarfed if this thing does hit.
Africa is in sad shape. Niger is full of malnourished and starving people and they are being made to give up their chickens to be culled. Some experts are saying that the high AIDS rate in Africa and lack of medical infrastructure will let infected people carry the virus for longer due to their immune system and make them a prime mixing pot to brew a strain that could be a potential start location of a pandemic. Some say Asia.

As I said If my husband is to work in such a situation I am making sure he has some protection and that we have supplies ready. I wouldn't want to lose him because I blew it off. If it doesn't go pandemic the supplies will be used anyway. I have enjoyed talking with you. :)

It's a good idea to keep a certain amount of shelf-safe food, light sources, heat sources, a radio for news, and water or the means to purify water on hand for emergencies. Whether it's bird flu, earthquakes, floods, or even shipping strikes, disruptions to public utilities and food distribution do happen.

The best way to do this is NOT to have an "in case of emergency only" box of food stored, but to stock your shelf-safe foods and beverages in your pantry and use them all the time. Rotate your stock, using the oldest first, the same way the grocery store sells it. Ensure that you consistently replenish your stock. In this way, you will not find yourself with expired emergency foods when you need them the most. Also, and this is especially important if you have kids, you will know what you and your kids will eat and how to make it. If it turns out that your two-year-old absolutely will not eat the chicken soup you have 18 cans of, you and your two-year old will be a lot more unhappy than you need to be. If it turns out that the vacuum-packed mushroom stroganoff you have a whole flat of in the basement gives you the shits, you really aren't very prepared! Being able to make familiar dishes out of familiar goods will be good for your mind as well as your stomach.

Keeping the means to purify water and provide heat and light on hand does not necessarily have to be an expensive proposition. Your household does not need to do all of it. Get with your neighbors, your neighborhood watch, your condo or apartment or homeowners' association, and decide who is responsible for which part. If possible, organize these associations to use dues collected to purchase the expensive parts - a water purification unit, a generator, a portable shower, a chem toilet - for the use of the association.

Such organizations can also be valuable for maintaining communications. Set up a communications tree. Know who is responsible for contacting whom. This can be critical in times of disaster.

IMHO this sounds like the PSA that *should* be coming out of Health and Human Services, FEMA, and other government agencies. Instead, we get "omg duct tape and plastic" and "keep tuna and powdered milk under the bed!". It seems to me that if these agencies can't manage to make the recommendations that any Floridian knows, they can't really be serious about getting Americans prepared for disruptions and disasters. They're making half-assed token gestures to keep people in a state of panic and fear, that if faithfully followed, will make any such disruption or disaster much worse than it actually needs to be.
