TLC has been going down the tubes in terms of ratings,losing 23 percent of its prime time audience in 2005. In an a la carte world, TLC either would be prohibitively expensive or, more likely, it would be gone, with its bandwidth used for other content or phone service.

43. TLC is nothing more than an infomercial for Home Decorating companies

TLC, History & Discovery were THE reasons I first subscribed to cable, all those years ago.. Remember "Connections"?.. When PBS quit showing those programs, TLC took them up and my boys just loved them..so did we.. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE home improvement shows, but TLC's idea of them is not as good as HGTV (their claim to fame IS decorating).. TLC seems fixated on British makeover shows where sod on a bedroom wall seems a viable decorating technique, and just about everything can be "fixed" with bamboo placemats and some glaze..

Before Animal Planet, it was called something else, and had some really cool & quirky shows.. My kitties especially loved "Bird TV".. The programming was not as slick as it is now, but it also was NOT reconstituted bits of existing programs cobbled together to "look new"..

The History channel was more than just WWII footage, rehashed to fit the current political slants..and Discovery channel was a lot more than " Whoo's Yer Daddy Now, Jesus"..or "Footsteps of Jesus? Sandals or Loafers"?...or "" Check Out Jesus' New Wheels"..


The way these once great channels are run today (after numerous buy-outs), I doubt if I would even include them..


I would have to include the University channels -the "8000"s on Dish..and the "9000"s too .. The shows I regualrly watch are programmed into my PVR, so I am not even sure what "real" channels they are on.. I would have to have access to any PBS channels and the following shows:

I would drop the cable news ones - every damn one of them. Then maybe they might get the idea.

As for all the rest, there are many gems that pop up from time to time so it would not hurt that much to support them. The argument that ala carte would inhibit "innovative" programming could be negated by opting in for most of the non-news networks. They ain't no innovatin' going on at Faux, MSNBC, CNN or the rest.

And I have never paid extra for any of the premium or movie channels.

I'd probably also sign up for some channels like TNT and USA because they occasionally have good movies. Maybe FX because they occsionaly have innovative shows.

I'd skip all of the speciality channels and the "educational" commercial channels like A&E, Discovery, History, etc. because they suck these days. Just hype over pseudo science, tabloid crap and "exposes" of irrelevant subjects.

I'd keep Trinity Broadcsting for comic relief. I love watching those Polyester Preachers.

46. I'm considering just going to Over The Air (OTA) digital...

... and having my friend BT get us the shows that we'd really want to watch.

My son watches PBS Kids most of the time anyway... and since that's also on the digital multiplex offered by UNC-TV he's thus satisfied plus our DVD collection.

My wife is into Desperate Housewives and American Idol. That's regular TV, so no problems there either. I can just add a TV card to the spare PC (already hooked up to the TV) and I have an instant DVR.

And as I mentioned earlier, any other shows we "must watch" we can either watch at a relative's house or get the tape (or usually these days the disc) from our friends.
