When God is pushed further to the Right
in political discourse (that is no longer a loving God of social justic but a stern and patriarchal and murderous Deity), many otherwise liberal Xians seem to shuffle their concept of the deity to a theological center that doesn't really exist. Just as they do in seeking centrist positions. So the old progressive Deity of the Social Gospel is left futher and futher behind. Has anyone else noticed this?

6. There is an answer to the Christian right
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 05:39 AM by Selatius
There is a school of thought in Christendom that appears to be the exact opposite of the one preached by the folks on the extreme right.

Those who subscribed to it at the turn of the century were known as Christian socialists. They believed in brotherhood and mutual cooperation between all of man for survival and a happier life. They eschewed destructive competition and war for limited resources, and they condemned capitalism because it was a system built on the exploitation of others' labor for personal gain at the expense of the exploited, and Jesus always stood with the poor, the exploited, and the helpless.

They subscribed to the theological school of that later was redubbed as "liberation theology" after 1955 thanks to Gustavo Gutiérrez. Unfortunately, the current Pope Benedict XVI is an opponent of liberation theology.

7. Because I believe in God - I Hate Religion...

Religion makes it OK to go against God's nature of perfect love.

8. i'm not sure centrism exists at all anymore.
in religion or other wise -- our situation has become rather dire -- and we asked to moderate with the forces and thinking that has made it all extreme.

if leftist christians like me want a different theology expressed -- they are going to have to get angry and demand coverage of their message -- and they are going to have to do something that pains them.

break with the theology of hate.

c.s. lewis was in fact wrong -- claiming a belief in jesus does not make us all christians.
