Just noticed my dog takes human insulin, $55 a bottle
and phenobarbitol for $12 a bottle. Does anyone know how much humans are charged for the same drugs?? I bet it is at least 5 times what the vet charges for the same medicines.

1. Our diabetic cat does human insulin
and we are paying the same rate as humans for it. The price actually went way up recently.

5. I think it is Humulin or something like that
I have to look at the bottle, which is at home.

6. If it's Humulin L 100 u/ml in a 10 ml vial, then $50-$60 per vial sounds

right. Our insurance covers somewhere between 80-90% of that cost. However, it's the glucose test strips (for checking blood sugar) which are EXTREMELY expensive (depending on which meter you use). For our meter it's averaging somewhere between 0.50 and 1.00 dollar per strip. We practice tight control and end up testing 10-12 times a day. That's an out-of-pocket expense between 2000-4000 / year.

3. My diabetic cat also takes human insulin.
Glargine (or Lantus -- there seem to be two different names for the same thing).

And it cost me $75 for one tiny bottle -- although at the teeny rate she gets injected -- it's lasting a long time.

4. Don't know about the insulin but my phenobarbital is real cheap
Like under 5 bucks for a month supply.

8. Wow, my dog's Humulin Lente only runs $31 a vial at the drugstore.
She's going to have to change to another insulin since Lily decided to stop making L and Ultralente as of last Dec. I still have 5 vials in the refridge.

She also uses 5 different anti-glaucoma eye drops, all of which are 'human'. Now those are expensive! She also has a couple of other daily meds that I buy from the drugstore.

I looked at my 'drug' insurance and about 95% of Criss' medicines would be covered if I could claim her as a dependent! Or if I changed my name to Crissy, perhaps the insurance company wouldn't notice that the prescriptions came from a vet!
