My 2008 Prediction: Bayh/Obama and Romney/Rice

Yeh, I know this will make a lot of people sick, kind of turns my stomach too, but I think it's as good a prediction as any. Both Bayh and Romney are savvy politicians who have been setting themselves up for a run for a very long time. Bayh's been both a Governor and Senator, so although he has a garland of Senate votes to pick at, he also has foreign policy experience. Romney doesn't have the foreign policy experience but he could mitigate that by choosing Rice- not to mention the fact that she's a black woman. He doesn't have a senate record to pick at. Romney is a blue state Governor. Bayh is a red state Senator.

Both these guys are likely to appeal to the broad middle and independents. Partisan dems might very well vote for Bayh if Obama was on the ticket. Partisan pukes, particularly the fundy types might have a harder time bringing themselves to vote for Romney/Rice.

Just a little bit of meaningless speculation on a rainy March morn. (Yes, I know focusing on 2006 is much more important.)

All that said, and from a purely political and strategical POV, not an ideological one, what do you think?

12. I'm not sure they would go for a woman, period.

Many talk about putting Rice out there to combat Hillary. But I don't think they will actually will elect Rice or any other woman in the primaries.

Much as I'd like him to run, he's said publicly and emphaticly that he won't, not in 2008 anyway.

now. He might see fit to change his mind in the next year. Besides, I've never heard him say he wouldn't take a VP spot, only that he wouldn't run for pres.

But if he does I worry his opponents will use the fact that he said he wouldn't against him. Flip-flop, "how can you trust him?", etc. It was awhile ago that I heard him say he wouldn't, but I believe he even ruled out VP. It was on Meet the Press and Russert was grilling him. "Are you going to run?" "no, I'm going to stay in the senate." "How about VP?" "I'm going to stay in the senate." That's how I remember it, but I know better than to trust my memory fully.

I wish he would, but don't think he will. I imagine he'll be a powerful campaign ally for anybody who does run though.

My hunch is that if we do first and we name Obama as VP then the Repubs won't name Rice.

14. I think I am hoping not. Obama is still (for lack of a better cliche') wet

behind the ears, and I'd like to see him take bigger stands on a few things rather than being led around by the nose by some of the "old guard". Bayh, I don't even want to think about...If a scenario such as this were to happen, I would realize, sadly and finally, that it really isn't in the hands of "We the People" anymore.
