Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 11:34 AM by MnFats
he is pissed over the Scientology episode....trampling on religious beliefs etc., but as parker/stone point out....it didn't bother him so much when it was Christians, Jews, Muslims and Mormons they were skewering....did Scientology heirarchy FORCE him to quit?

http://www.southflorida.com/news/ats-ap_entertainment11mar14,0,6032976.story

The soul singer is unhappy at religious gags

Soul singer Isaac Hayes has quit cartoon 'South Park' after an episodes lampooning religion.

The star who has provided the voice for character Chef since the show's inception, has become upset at recent shows that have attacked spirituality.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes said in a statement after he announced he had been asked to be let out of his contract.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honoured," he added. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

A recent episode of the programme sent up Tom Cruise and Scientology, which is also Haynes' religion, although he did not specifically mention that show in his statement.

However 'South Park''s co-creator Matt Stone declared that the episode - 'Trapped In The Closet' - was the reason behind Haynes' move, suggesting his respect for religious beliefs was narrow.

"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology," Stone told the Associated Press. "He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of cheques - with our show making fun of Christians."

2. What I find weird
Is that the scientology episode was aired literally months ago, and wasn't the last episode in the season. If Hayes was so mad, why didn't he quit when he saw the script last summer!?

4. I guess it took that long for the hierarchy to get to him
From my limited understanding of Scientology, there is a hierarchy of church elite that may have pressured Hayes to quit. But then again, this is mere speculation on my part.

17. Good choice...
but he died...

But a good choice--it might be funny if they got a 'rap' guy and made him the new chef...they could explain it as a court-appointed 'community service' and make fun about how many hours he got for 'capping a guy'...

7. Expect a "Who Killed Chef?" episode
There is a lot of potential for low humor in that one. Consider the cast of weeping floosies and their outraged husbands.

Chef's character might be funnier when he's gone.

10. Has "The Simpsons" ever done Scientology?
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 11:57 AM by Monkey see Monkey Do
I vaguely remember a Heavens Gate / Jonestown style thing (a bit like the Blainetology episode in SP), but I'm about 7 years behind current episodes & haven't watched it in years.

I ask because Nancy Cartwright is still on board.

(& apropos of nothing, I'm still in shock on discovering last night that Paul Haggis (Crash) is a Scientologist!)

35. You may be thinking of the Movementarian (sp?) Simpsons ep.
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 01:06 PM by Mike Daniels
It was a cult but more along the lines of your standard collective-living cult (brainwashing, starvation and slave labor)than a doomsday/apocalyptic cult thing.

In actuality, The Simpsons has been pretty respectful of religion and the beliefs behind the major ones. The humor seems to poke more at the ritualist practices that occur during the services and the hypocrisy of the ministers, rabbis, etc.

In other words they love greed, support war, and couldn't give a shit about the poor. In fact they think Kenny's poverty is hilarious.

They don't like fundies because they want their grass, booze and whores, but they are repuke scum nonetheless.

At least fundies are sincere. Stone and Parker are anti-humanist assholes.

....they actually believe that what they're doing is right and godly, etc.

People like Stone and Parker are strictly in it for the money and couldn't give a crap about anyone but themselves.

You're not aware that there is more than one kind of repuke? What planet do you live on?

I really like the kind that is just as hateful as the pubs. Fundies are more pure evil that you state and are responsible for most of the bad shit happening today. The libertarian pubs are just laughable and too self absorbed to do too much damage, but the fundies have organized and have control.

34. I couldn't disagree more.
Fundies are utterly clueless about everything and can be led around by their leaders barking "family values!" "sanctity of life!". They have ZERO understandin of what the real GOP agenda is.

Libertarians are more intelligent and know better, but they are amoral greedheads. It's people like this that are in charge of the GOP and give the marching orders. Whatever keeps their pockets lined. They will use religion, gays, abortion, whatever it is to keep power, but they couldn't personally care less about any of those things.

Fundies create an awful lot of evil, are intellectually lazy and have no business inside a voting booth, but most of them are well-intentioned. (Talking about rank-and-file fundie voters, not the Falwells & Robertsons - they are no more Christian than I am)

33. from wikipedia
"Parker and his creative partner, Matt Stone, have received criticism and acclaim from both sides of the political spectrum, making them hard to pin down politically, except that they display irreverence for almost any authority figure. The term South Park Republican has been coined to refer to those who claim that South Park reflects a Republican, although non-traditional, viewpoint. Historically, though, Parker has described himself as "middle-ground", and he is a registered member of the United States Libertarian Party."

Trey Parker:

Is a gun owner.
Has blue eyes.
Is left-handed.
Loves musicals.
Stands 6'1 (1m85).
s a talented pianist.
Is a Denver Broncos fan.

Speaks Japanese.
Is a registered Libertarian.
Is a member of the band DVDA .
Is a big fan of The Cure and Radiohead.
Is also credited as Juan Schwartz.
Has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Owns additional homes in Seattle and Kauai.

40. That show did not bash Bush.
It had an adorably likable, slightly dimwitted Bush who barely resembled the real one. It was one of the worst parodies ever on TV, and was justly canceled.

I remember tuning in to it, hoping to see Bush bashed, and basically saw a tepid 80's sitcom, except with Bush/Pickles lookalikes as the stars. Stone and Parker love Bush and hate liberals above all things.

30. In this month's Rolling Stone there's a big article on Scientology and it
mentions that the church was less than thrilled with the South Park episode criticizing it. I was reading it to kill time at work so the information isn't burned into my brain but I think it said that the Church of Scientology managed to make sure the episode won't air again.

Here's a link to the article: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/9363363/inside_scientology
