Nuclear Bunker Buster Bombs againt Iran: This Way Lies Madness
Nuclear Bunker Buster Bombs againt Iran: This Way Lies Madness

by Stephen M. Osborn

The latest information I have had from the followers of Bush is that he has demanded and received permission to use nuclear “bunker busters” in Iran in a preemptive strike. As a nuclear veteran (Operation Redwing, Bikini, 1956) I can affirm that this is absolute madness. The “bunker buster” is a cute sounding name for a nuclear horror. Air bursts are horrible enough, doing incredible destruction through heat, shock and high initial radiation. The fallout from an air burst is registered around the world. A surface or subsurface burst is even deadlier and more long lasting.

The Castle-Bravo blast at Bikini in 1954 was a fifteen megaton surface blast. It blew a hole over a mile wide and four hundred feet deep in the atoll, completely obliterating the island and vaporizing over thirteen billion cubic feet of coral, rock and water, sending it in a radioactive cloud extending into the stratosphere. The fallout over the atolls downwind was devastating to the people and ecology there. All of that material is rendered extremely radioactive and as it cools it condenses to fall as rain or radioactive “snow” which contaminates everything it touches. The effects are felt worldwide.

Firing der Bush’s bunker busters in Iran, or anywhere else for that matter, will vaporize hundreds of thousands of tons of earth, water and rock and send this radioactive soup downwind to kill and sicken whole populations. Those immediately downwind will die quickly, in hours or days. Those further downwind will take longer. The global incidences of cancers and disease will again rise markedly. The land downwind will remain contaminated and unusable for generations. If there were deep shelters, it has been postulated by the designers that the bunker busters would not penetrate deeply enough to affect them. I imagine that would initiate the attack theory of sending one nuke after another into the same hole. Picture the intensity of the radioactive disaster that would perpetrate on the area.

There are not too many of us left that witnessed the tests, but there are a number of groups that monitor the effects through cancers, birth defects, both physical and mental and monitoring of contamination in the environment. We are still feeling the results of those tests. I have exchanged e-mails with downwinders and with the children of downwinders who have had children with birth defects that had no previous history of such things in their families; who suffer from cancers that are peculiar to nuclear radiation.

2. If they nuke Iran
I will virtually guarantee that within five years we will see a nuclear strike here in America. There will be literally THOUSANDS (if not MILLIONS) of Jihadists born that very instant, with no other goal than to cause us as much pain as possible. There will be no turning back from that decision, no negotiation, no peace as long as one of us or one of them still exists.

It's pure madness, plain and simple, to even contemplate it. The hatred that was born of our invasion of Iraq will seem like a fit of childish pique compared to what it will generate.

12. It would be an act of savage brutality aimed not at
overt aggressors, but at innocents, in a country that, up until a few years ago (before Bush's ignorant 'Axis of Evil' speech) was making great strides toward democracy. There are still a lot of people there who are guilty of nothing other than living in a country ruled by religious fanatics.

To even contemplate dropping nukes on them is BEYOND evil and a perfect example of why my disdain and disgust for this administration grows by leaps and bounds every single day. The America I grew up believing in would NEVER do such a thing. Yes, we bombed Japan, but we were at WAR with them. It was still wrong, since it was most likely unnecessary, but it's not the same thing at all. Since those two bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nukes have NEVER been used against humans and I'll be damned if I'll forgive these people for doing it again.

What would it say about America if we were the only country to ever use nuclear weapons...not just once, or twice, but again?

How badly CAN they fuck this up?

The mind boggles.

19. Back in the late 70s
I had neighbors who were Iranian. This was during or around the time of the whole hostage crisis. I remember them as being really nice people who were horrified by what was going on, though the kids were just kids. The boy was my age, 13 or so, and the girl was a little younger.

They were good people.

They have no love for the current rulers of Iran, but they still have family there. They visit occasionally & have been hoping things would get better.

One Iranian lady will soon be a US citizen. I'm quite sure she will vote Democratic.

13. Just as in Iraq their goal is to take Iranian oil off the market
in order to raise the value of their own reserves, and drive prices higher.

It's for the same reason Goldfinger wanted to nuke Fort Knox, to make his own gold worth that much more.

so it's oil production would've been limited no matter what.

They'd been depressing prices by putting too much oil on the market, either through the Oil for Food program, or through smuggling.

Iraq has the world's second largest oil reserves.

Iran has the world's fourth largest oil reserves.

Venezuelan oil production also threatens to bring prices down.

Taking those reserves off the market makes for record high oil prices, and record oil company profits.

What would be their motivation to bring prices down when they control the supply?

The greater their control of the supply, the greater their ability to manipulate prices higher.

There's no need to invade a country to get them to put their oil on the market.

If left alone countries will put all the oil they can on the market.

If left alone countries will cheat on any production quotas they are supposed to follow.

War makes gas cost more.

The best way to insure a steady supply of cheap oil is to leave these oil producing countries alone.

33. I thought intentionally controlling supply was illegal.
Of course, these evil bastards are playing a bloody destructive international game that, apparently, gets a pass on U.S. law. Since demand is presently guaranteed, the surest way of squeezing every dime out of humanity is to control supply.

Excellent analysis. Thank you for sharing it.

23. actually, they want to control oil SCARCITY. If they destroy oil they
do not control, that plays into their hands, because that means LESS oil available overall, but a higher percentage of it controlled by THEM.

You do no make huge profits in oil if its abundant.

these cats are all about controlling the FLOW of oil. the amount is irrelevant, and in fact the less there is, the MORE they can control it.

36. They will nuke heavily populated areas...
like Tehran to reduce the chance of having a large scale insurgency. The oil they want is in the Khuzestan province just across the border from Iraq. We will probably shift our forces across the border rather easily and occupy the area (in a half-assed manner of course).

22. I'm starting to believe it's not because of the oil and/or the Oil Bourse.
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 08:14 AM by no_hypocrisy
I'm thinking it's simply because they can and want to.

They've been sitting on their hands for years with all these cool mega-destructive weapons and can't use them. Add in the fact that these guys are pumped for revenge against Iran for the humiliation inflicted upon this country in 1979 when the students stormed the American embassy in Tehran and held over 400 hostages, not to mention how the Shah, America's favorite puppet dictator, was removed and exiled from Iran. This is payback for Iran, for Vietnam, and who knows what else.

Oh, the oil would have been nice, but they probably believe if we can't have it, then nobody will have it. Prices go out of control with the supply being taken off the market due to irradiation. Win-win situation.

And the pesky oil bourse will be a very temporary annoyance like Iraq. Once you start bombing, no government, no country, no economy, no problem.

This government makes "Dr. Strangelove" look like a documentary.

25. ***PETITION TO SIGN: NO WAR WITH IRAN ***
Hello,

For the past year, the growing tensions mounting between the US, Israel, and Iran are reaching a point where military action against Iran is w/in months of becoming reality. The repercussions are terrifying as such military action could involve countries such as China and Russia as they share massive energy/economic interests w/ Iran. The most likely scenario we would face would be the collapse of the US economy as the combination of a massive rise in oil prices and a run on the US dollar would surely be the weapon many countries would use to fight back against a preemptive US or Israeli strike.

For a collection of articles and resources on this subject you can visit this link: http://reseaudesign.com/research/iran/iran_summery.html

I'm starting up a petition which I will be sending out to as many members of Congress as possible. I'm asking for help to get this signed by as many people, possible in the next month. Send it to as many people you can.

http://www.petitiononline.com/n0war1rn /

Also, here is another petition you can sign from another group:

Thanks for your time

27. You'll never believe this.
Just as I read this post, this rockin' tune came on the radio. Look at these lyrics.

Rise, by Primal Scream

A life of work, is a life of crime
You pay your taxes, you serve your time
All that money, where does it go?
Schools, prisons, hospitals, roads
Government funding of military science
Genetically engineered ultraviolent
DNA, killer genes
To program microchips, marines
See stealth bombers and tomahawks
On CNN, pay-per-view war

RISE, RISE
RISE, RISE

Hey wage slave where's your profit share?
They got ya down they're gonna keep you there
Freeze your mind, metamorphose
Cocaine karma in the heroin zone
Multinational life is cheap
Soldiers, workers, maggots meat
Get on up, protest riot
Are you collateral damage or a legitimate target?

RISE, RISE
RISE, RISE

Sweet sixteen dehumanized
Deaths head factory suicide
Sweet sixteen dehumanized
Deaths head factory suicide
Sweet sixteen dehumanized
Deaths head factory suicide
Sweet sixteen dehumanized
Deaths head factory suicide

RISE, RISE
RISE, RISE

28. The B61 (Mk-61) Bomb
The B61 (Mk-61) Bomb

Intermediate yield strategic and tactical thermonuclear bomb

Features of individual models:
• Mod 3: Tactical bomb with 4 yield options - 0.3 Kt, 1.5 Kt, 60 Kt, and 170 Kt. This is the highest yield tactical bomb mod. Along with the mod 4, this was the first mod developed using PBX-9502 IHE, and the first to be equipped with a microprocessor based arming and firing system (in 1980).
• Mod 4: Tactical bomb with 4 yield options - 0.3 Kt, 1.5 Kt, 10 Kt, and 45 Kt.
• Mod 7: Strategic bomb with multiple yield options - lowest is 10 Kt, highest is 300 Kt. This is a converted Mod 1 bomb. The conversion replaced the earlier PBX-9404 HE with PBX-9502 IHE. It has the highest yield of any B61 family weapon (including other warhead derivatives, like the W-80).
• Mod 10: Tactical bomb with 4 yield options - 0.3 Kt, 5 Kt, 10 Kt, and 80 Kt. Converted W-85 Pershing II missile warhead.
• Mod 11: Tactical or strategic bomb with multiple yield options presumably ranging from 10 Kt (and possibly lower yields) to 340 Kt. This is a modified Mod 7 with a one-piece case hardened steel center case, and a new nose piece and rear subassembly to provide ground penetration capability for defeating buried targets. The parachute assembly has also been removed, and new aerodynamic fins added for high-velocity, accurate delivery. The B61-11 buries itself 3-6 meters underground before detonation, transfering a much higher proportion of the explosion energy to ground shock, compared to surface bursts. The actual warhead itself is identical to the Mod 7. This is the first new model of a U.S. warhead to go into service since warhead production was suspended in 1989. It is being produced by field modification of existing Mod 7s.

<snip>

Efforts are currently underway at Sandia to develop a new weapon using the B61 warhead package. This is the BIOS (Bomb Impact Optimization System), a guided glide bomb that would permit release of nuclear weapons at a greater range from the target, and by using the GPS satellite system would permit delivery with 1 meter accuracy.
