A side effect of the censure resolution
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 09:44 AM by Mass
I am totally sympathetic with Feingold's censure resolution. However, I have a problem with the way it was managed.

Feingold could not have expected that, while he was going alone and without having advised his fellow Democrats about what he was doing, they would rush to support him (he knows better). He did it however. I like that he did it, but it should have been done in a way that makes Bush the subject of the news.

Unfortunately, because of well-prepared talking points by the RW and because of Feingold somehow attacking Democrats on the media (segment that was not surprisingly repeated over and over by Fox News throughout the day), the story will be once again how the democrats are weak and disorganized. Note: is there a clip of Feingold saying that somewhere. I have trouble believing that Feingold said what was actually repeated on the blogs.

We now see the Washington Post go for his favorite subject: "The Democrats are in disarray".

I guess that by now, we can just hope a few other Democrats rush and support him, because if they dont, it will be a major blow for 06. May be it was Feingold's plan, but if it was, it is kind of messy.

1. Does anyone know when it will come up for a vote?
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 10:15 AM by Skip Intro
My home pc bit the dust and I've lost track of what's going on with this.

Thanks.

on edit - I think the vote will tell the story on whether Senate Democrats are in disarray or not. I would hope a few Republicans would stand with the Constitution as well. Its what they swore to do.

3. I agree, but I dont know if and when it will come to a vote
It has been referred to the Judiciary Committee. It is now to Specter to schedule the hearings and then send it back to the floor. Will he do it?

In the meantime, the problem is that, if a few Democrats at least do not stand up quickly with Feingold, it will be a missed opportunity and it will make the story a story about the Democrats and not about Bush.

Its hard to believe Feingold didn't confer with other Seante Dems beforehand. I have to believe he did. The only info I've gotten from the media has been a passing glance at CNN/Headline News, and of course, Countdown w/ Olberman. I haven't seen the "Dems are in disarray" spin, but again, I've had limited access to the net. I don't watch faux, even for a minute, and haven't read the spin from the big papers, but I've no doubt the rw media are trying to make the Dems the story.

Its such a damn shame too. If a true poll were taken of the American people (who really give a ***), I'd bet 60% + would be for censure. America doesn't like bush. America is fed up with him and his whole gang. Even beyond the principle of doing what is right regardless of the polls, its hard to believe that Dems aren't publicly standing with the effort, given the sentiment of the nation about this regime. Maybe there's a bigger plan? Maybe there's some timing aspect we're not seeing?

I have heard the spin that Dems are wary of doing anything along the lines of censure/impeachment because they "remeber how the effort to impeach Clinton backfired" on the repukes. I really hope that's not the case. Its clearly two different situations - a popular president attacked for bs charges vs. an unpopular president who has broken the law repeatedly.

man...you're right, tho. Dems need to stand with Feingold quick. Like today...

5. Fox News took the story straight from the Associated Press article.

If the Senator talked to AP reporters, why was it only Fox who carried the story on air? These are the only two places I found Senator Feingold's quotes.

Do I dare suggest that this was a planted AP story for the benefit of Fox?

If this is the case, shame on me for falling for this divisive Repub maneuverer. I will take back my bad comments about Senator Feingold, comments about other Dem's.

6. Censure needed to be done
I am amazed that any dem would dare to bring this to the floor. I thought we would need to wait for Bernie Suanders.
