1. The official figure is misleading, because the missing figure remains
unresolved.

3. Good point.
Still, even the official figure isn't widely reported.

2. Trick question.
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 11:19 AM by Yollam
The number who died from the direct effects of the storm were relatively small. The number who died from the government's lack of response was into the thousands.

Is it really fair to blame that on Katrina?

9. I follow the California Rule of "Egg Shell Skull" --
if you bump (ever so gently) a little old lady - with unusually severe osteoporosis - with your shopping cart -- a bump so gentle that a healthy person would not have felt it -- in California at least --- that "gentle bump" was the cause of her broken hip.

I volunteer with a major NGO and have been working with Katrina survivors. What I am seeing 2300 miles from NOLA:
    a) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - even in the normally resilient kids (and a lot of it)
    b) Anecdotally - deterioration and death from heretofore "managed" chronic disease processes (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, etc.)
These were "caused" by Katrina.

I admit - Bushie would never name me a VA or Social Security Hearing Examiner. ;)

14. yes the storm targeted elders and the sick
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 12:33 PM by pitohui
once you got out of the immediate affected area, you did hear the ads from walgreens and the like urging people to come in, telling them that they could legally get their prescriptions for free and without written doctor's prescriptions, just bring their old bottles, but the power outages went all the way up to meridian mississippi -- hundreds of miles -- many of the most vulnerable people never heard these messages or knew of the availability of these benefits

also many cancer patients saw interruptions in their chemo or other treatment for months

keep in mind the entire public hospital system, perhaps one of the bestin the country for trauma treatment, was destroyed by katrina and people who relied on public health care suddenly found themselves in states that don't necessarily have any but emergency-based public health care

those deaths would not be counted but hell they're just as dead

truly truly sad

6. Good observation
Deaths as a direct result of the hurricane were probably minimal whereas deaths attributable to the abysmal reponse were substantial.

a lot of people drowned, over 1,000, i'm pretty sure, i think almost every name on the official list of 1,301 is a drowning victim, all the ones i know of are

deaths attributable to the poor response are harder to count and spread out across the country as people not picked up at superdome or other places for days, are evacuated to distant states, and died their of exposure

who is keeping count of those folks?

19. Drowned does not mean drowned in the initial flooding; remember Broussard?
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 12:53 PM by HamdenRice
A lot of people drowned in the aftermath. Never forget Aaron Broussard's interview on MTP:

MR. RUSSERT: All right.

MR. BROUSSARD: ...that have worked 24/7. They're burned out, the doctors, the nurses. And I want to give you one last story and I'll shut up and let you tell me whatever you want to tell me. The guy who runs this building I'm in, emergency management, he's responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, "Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?" And he said, "Yeah, Mama, somebody's coming to get you. Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody's coming to get you on Friday." And she drowned Friday night. She drowned Friday night.

MR. RUSSERT: Mr. President...

MR. BROUSSARD: Nobody's coming to get us. Nobody's coming to get us. The secretary has promised. Everybody's promised. They've had press conferences. I'm sick of the press conferences. For God sakes, shut up and send us somebody.

MR. RUSSERT: Just take a pause, Mr. President. While you gather yourself in your very emotional times, I understand, let me go to Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi.

5. Horrific answer: about 2,000 dead; about 2,500 still missing
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 11:26 AM by HamdenRice
I was talking to a doctor about this the other day, and I asked how many of the 2000 dead do you think died during the storm and initial flooding, and how many died in the following days from drowning because they were not rescued, thirst, exposure, hunger, and lack of medicine while prince georgie played the guitar and ate cake.

She said probably about half. Yes, that's right, perhaps 2,250 people died because of criminal negligence of the administration.

That's why it amazes me when 9/11 truth issues are raised and immediately shouted down the the mantra: no president, even bush, would allow or participate in the murder of 3000 Americans.

Yeah, right.

10. No, I DON'T want to guess
I know there's over a thousand dead and maybe 2000+ missing, but who's to say if they're dead or have just been lost in the system. REmember the panic and such? Families got seperated and lost touch for weeks or months. I'm not going to make a ass of myself and say something's fishy going on when I don't know for sure just to win brownie points from you.

11. we still don't know
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 12:28 PM by pitohui
there are around 1,300 logged and accepted official dead for louisiana and mississippi

others were dead within a few days of being evacuated but died in other states, for example, supposedly around 70 died in houston superdome, some states won't provide information about how many died in katrina-related events, last i heard georgia says they don't keep such data, and there were people evacuated to every state (even alaska!) except hawaii, so...that's undoubtedly hundreds there not logged

cataldie thinks 300-400 certainly dead whose bodies have not been found in lakeview and lower 9th ward but confirmed by family to be missing and seen in area shortly before the storm, for instance, the horrific story of the young couple whose rental house was under the notorious barge, the families know the couple stayed in the house, but the barge was only removed a few days ago, and the bodies not yet found, perhaps never can be found at this point, and to think there are hundreds more stories like this that cataldie has collected

unfortunately the cadaver dogs that came to search for these 300-400 bodies went away after a dispute between FEMA and the double tree hotel...so there is no one to even look for them if they do exist

an unknown number of people missing from the miss. gulf coast, i've heard different stories there, from dozens to hundreds, those bodies will not be found, that's storm surge, if an entire family was wiped out in one of those apartment buildings or homes near the beach, there is no one alive to report anyone missing, which i think accounts for lower missing person reports from that area despite much greater and more devastating storm surge, entire families would be gone there, no one to rescue off the roofs because roofs did not survive

i think it would take many years to get an accurate account, hell, it took many years for camille, a much smaller storm

my best guess is 2,000-plus, since we already have confirmed bodies of 1,301-plus

18. The question isn't bullshit - the asnwers are
You either take the "official tally" - i.e. the republican bullshit, or the more "reasonable estimates" - i.e. the democrat bullshit.

17. Medical Examiner: they're probably in the marshes, washed into gulf
After noting there are about 2000 missing, the story goes on to say:

http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/HurricaneKatrina/story?id=1668003&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

The state medical examiner, Dr. Louis Catilde, admits that some of those still lost will never be reunited with their families.

"Are there people in the marshes? Quite probably," said Catilde. "Are there people who washed into the Gulf? Very probably. Will they ultimately be found? I don't know the answer to that. Possibly never."
