Park’s booking for rally changes

By Matt Leclercq
Staff writer
Once again, antiwar protesters rallying in Rowan Park on Saturday will be met by a smaller but fervent group of pickets who support the war. Yet if the pickets had gotten their way, it would be them — not the antiwar crowd — filling the park on the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion.

A member of Free Republic, a support-the-war group, reserved Rowan Park for this weekend immediately after last year’s large antiwar rally at the park. The reservation was described as for a two-day picnic and required an $800 check covering fees and a deposit.

Lynn Huber, a co-chairman of Free Republic’s chapter in North Carolina, said the group didn’t intend to prevent another antiwar protest by reserving the park. She said the park was reserved with the intention of staging an upbeat festival for military families to take their minds off a grim anniversary.

(Chuck Fager, head of the Fayetteville Quaker House) said he put no pressure on the city for use of Rowan Park, one of the largest outdoor venues in Fayetteville. He was unaware of who had originally reserved the park until told by a reporter Tuesday, though he assumed it was someone who wasn’t sympathetic to the antiwar side.

1. Great story.
And here's my favorite part: the Parks and Recreations Director is named Robert Barefoot

Barefoot in the Park? Who writes this stuff?

2. LOL I didn't pick up on that! Actually, Barefoot is a Lumbee Indian
surname and so is pretty common. I wonder if he gets many jokes about that.

4. So, let me get this straight
The Freepers lied, said they were going to hold a "family picnic", and their little ruse cost them the park? And, if they had told the truth, they'd have the park? It is to laugh!!
