GOP steals Menendez's idea
The Republican-controlled Senate passed a GOP-sponsored amendment to the federal budget today that would increase port security funding by nearly $1 billion, and voted down an amendment on the issue put through by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-Hoboken.

McConnell's amendment would provide $978 million for port security funding. Menendez's would have provided $965 million. McConnell's amendment was voted on first today, then Menendez's.

Menendez, along with the majority of senators, voted for McConnell's amendment, and in brief remarks on the Senate floor before the vote, Menendez said he was pleased that his Republican colleagues were joining his call to strengthen port security.
``Last week Republicans voted down in committee, on party lines, my amendment to increase port security funding,'' Menendez said. ``But I am glad that my colleagues voted for port security funding, right after they voted against it.''
