Poll question: Are you a Liberal or a DLCer?
I wonder where the bulk of DU is on the political spectrum of the left.

Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 08:22 PM by Mass
Some people in the DLC are more liberal than some people who are not in the DLC.

(I voted other because of the way the question was asked, even if I am not DLC and probably more liberal than many here, if I believe the tests that have been posted often).

13. Other.
I believe that our nation must undergo the radical change in values outlined by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his speech "A Time to Break Silence (Beyond Vietnam)," which he delivered on April 4, 1967 at the Riverside Church in NYC.

"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of theworld revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a 'thing-oriented' society to a 'person-oriented' society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."

26. Liberals are moderate - I'm a progressive.
The definition has been warped in recent years, but liberals have always been pro-establishment types.

I eschew the name liberal because it's too far to the right, not too far to the left.

35. I don't know what you're trying to say, but...
To me, a "liberal" - IE a John Kerry/Walter Mondale/Hubert Humphrey type is a smidge to the left of today's DLCer's but have always been there to get the gov't's back (voting to fund wars, etc.) no matter what depths of corruption it sinks to.

That's not to say that there aren't a lot of good liberals out there - there are. But they are by definition pro-establishment. The idea that our form of government could fall and be replaced by another is anathema to the liberal. I personally wouldn't miss it as the "grand experiment" was too deeply flawed from the outset.

48. Ya know
lots of people want to go to Hawaii. There's lots of ways to get there, sail boat, plane, cruise liner, even a submarine. I'd bet there's even environmentally friendly bio-fuel crafts that can take you to Hawaii. But before one purchases a ticket or a vehicle, an enormous amount of work has already gone into this trip to Hawaii. Maps, radar, ports, security, etc. It takes alot of cooperation to get to Hawaii.

I can guarantee you that nobody gets there by standing in the street and screaming "Hawaii Now".

And if you think knowing all of that makes me DLC, well then so be it.

I'm VERY liberal on some issues and sort of conservative on other issues. I am registered independent. I usually vote Democrat, though at times I have voted Green Party. I have, in the past, voted Republican (I voted for Whitman back in my NJ days when I was more conservative than I am now. Before Bush.) That was a long time ago, though.

42. when I personified the question -- 60% of DUers backed backed a DLCer
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 04:31 AM by Douglas Carpenter
This was a poll I did just a few days ago:

Poll question: Of the last 8 Democratic nominees which one comes closest to reflecting your own personal political views and philosophy?

60% voted for one of three DLCers
8%voted for another moderate/moderate conservative Democrat

only 30% voted for one of two out and out liberals who ran on a clear liberal agenda.

54. Which shows the difference between perception and reality.
I believe your definition to be correct. I also believe that people see what they want to see of their heros. A lot of it is relative, ie comparitve to present day republicans who verge on fascist. It doesn't mean that people support DLC positions and don't realize it, it is that they're being duped, willingly.

BTW, I voted McGovern in your poll.

I hate to think people are being "duped, willingly". but I think you're on to something.

However, I can understand why a liberal would make a pragmatic choice to back a candidate who does not share their philosophy, I have been doing it myself in every general election for the last 30 years

I'm a left libertarian, I suppose. I'm not sure what liberal means anymore. Most of the liberals I know in NYC are concerned about 'books and the arts', are pro-choice and gay rights, but they have no interest in labor issues, workers rights, fighting poverty. They irritate me.

And I'm drifting farther leftward the longer I'm on this planet.

The bottom line is that federal government *can* be a force for good in society (if it's compentently managed).

I also don't believe in turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to those less fortunate -- we're all connected.

52. I am a progessive, not a liberal
I am for democracy, which is a state where citizenship is universal, equal and inalienable.

Democracy is government that works from the bottom up, not top down. I do not believe in elitism, either where decisions are placed in the hands of a favored class (such as the wealthy) or where the politically powerful assume they know what is best for the masses and make decisions without consulting the people. When constructing a social welfare program, those who will benefit should first be allowed to tell the bureaucrats what will benefit them, rather than the bureaucrats telling the people what will benefit and just throwing money at the problem. That why so many Great Society programs didn't work. It would also help achieve a lofty goal like bringing democracy to Iraq if one asked cab drivers in Baghdad or dock workers in Basra what they want, rather than relying on the input of a convicted embezzler who had spent most of his life in Europe and America.

53. I'm mostly liberal, in a legalistic sense
I support most liberal policies and legal ideas, but I also believe in personal responsibility. For example, I think abortion should be legal with few restrictions, if any. I also think people should be more sexually responsible about birth control and abstinence.

We should have a social safety net for the poor and to make sure children and disabled people in this country have roofs over their heads and enough food to eat. I also believe that if you have no money and no job, you should at least work somewhere, even if it's for minimum wage, until you find the right job. I'm not resentful of welfare recipients who are getting day care, medicaid, and food stamps, but working for the rest of their wages. That's what I want my tax dollars to support.

I support Social Security and Head Start, both of which are government programs that help people have better lives.

I would rather see the mentally ill treated in a hospital than sent to prison because they committed a crime due to being out on the street instead of inside a hospital. I recognize that some mental illnesses are not curable in 30 days or less, and require supervision of the patient for the rest of his or her life.

I didn't support the war in Iraq, but I do hope that since we are there, something good comes out of it for the Iraqis.

I support free speech for all, even those I don't agree with. I support freedom of religion, even the freedom to join a religion I don't like. I still have the right to tell you I don't like your religion, although for the most part, my manners will prevent that.

So I'm a liberal, but there are DLC candidates I like, such as Hillary Clinton.
