Blackmail?
Some people think the reason why some Dems aren't fighting is that the Republican data-mining machinery and illegal wiretaps have found out the skeletons in their closets. That they're cowed into covertly supporting this criminal power-grab by the administration and its enablers in Congress.

What's the worst that it could be, honestly? That they cheated on their spouses? Or smoked a little dope? Cheated on their taxes? Are they gay? Pagans? <gasp> Atheists?

If this is the case they just need to step forward and out themselves. Come clean and take the heat it generates. I'm not sure how it could be any worse than not doing what they were elected to do, which is to provide a balance for the Executive Branch and the opposing party in Congress.

They're alienating their base, which is NEVER a good thing to do, and it will likely cost them in the long run. Even IF we manage to take Congress again this year, those who pay attention will not forget their failure to stand up, and it will come back to haunt them later.

No lie. We deserve to hear the truth.

1. blackmail and/or anthrax mail
there is an assassin still at large, after all, with access to the U.S. Military's bio-weapons, and a predelection for sending letters to Dems

4. Believe it or not, I actually consider that a viable consideration...
Which is just plain sad.

That would be extortion.

6. indeed, and what is also sad-
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 08:33 PM by arcane1
is that these assassination attempts get NO media coverage any more... it's like they never happened

coincidence?

NOTHING is coincidence w/this administration

nothing

edited to add- the military, if I recall correctly, "accidentally" destroyed the original strain of anthrax that the letters' contents were derived from, making it a million times harder to trace the source

another "coincidence" I'm sure :eyes:

8. I'm reluctant to believe in too much coincidence anyway...
After a while it looks a lot like conspiracy.

3. Last night someone else posted about fear for their life.
HAve you forgotten about the antrax letters that were only sent to Dems and a few newspapers who also opposed Shrub?

I'd hate to think that was true, but I haven't forgotten!

5. Nope. Haven't forgotten...
But the matter still stands as a fight for truth and justice. I'm not sure that's even a good enough excuse, though I certainly understand it.

9. You want the truth? Those Dems ARE "fighting" - they're just not fighting
on OUR side.

The servants of the Ruling Class are all about protecting their masters. They don't need blackmail to keep them in line, they are willing aiders and abettors of the MIC/corporate agenda because that is the sphere in which they operate.

The only ones on our side are us. Do not look for saviors.

10. I think the same thing might be said about some of the Repubs
I know that it is expected -- and not strange at all -- for a political party to stick together, but these Republicans are downright spooky in how they march in lockstep (though a few are starting to speak out against Bush). Could some of THEM also be afraid? I ask, because it is impossible for me to believe that every single Republican in Congress thinks exactly the same way, and would continue to support bills and actions that can also harm THEIR constituents.

11. I don't think there is blackmail going on
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 08:42 PM by Innocent Smith
And if they were willing to sell out what is right in order to get votes they really don't deserve votes. But, I don't think this is happening.

I think the answer is also the simplest explaination. They are just more moderate than the base.

14. Too early for another Anthrax Attack-Wait 'till Nov '06 Elections
1.Chertoff was in Charge of the Anthrax investigation at the Dept of Justice (DoJ)
2. FBI agents were routinely cycled out of ( taken off) the investigation- no in depth prolonged continuity
3. First Target was the National Inquirer- which was publishing articles on the Drunken Bush Cyclone Sisters-
Why would anybody other than the Bush Crime Family pick this as their first target?
This info from Wikipedia:
"The anthrax
The letters contained at least two grades of anthrax material; the coarse brown material sent in the media letters and the fine powder sent to the two Senators. In addition, it has been suggested the anthrax material sent to the National Enquirer and then forwarded to AMI may have been an intermediate grade similar to the anthrax sent to the Senate.<8> The brown granular anthrax sent to media outlets in New York City caused only skin infections, cutaneous anthrax. The anthrax sent to the Senators caused the more dangerous form of infection known as inhalation anthrax, as did the anthrax sent to AMI in Florida. Although the anthrax preparations were of different grades, all of the material derived from the same bacterial strain. Known as the Ames strain, it was first researched at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Fort Detrick, Maryland. The Ames strain was then distributed to at least fifteen bio-research labs within the US and six overseas.

Radiocarbon dating conducted by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in June 2002 established that the anthrax was cultured no more than two years before the mailings"
and more
"The first set of anthrax letters had a Trenton, New Jersey postmark dated September 18, 2001, exactly one week after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Five letters are believed to have been mailed at this time, to ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and the New York Post, all in New York City; and the National Enquirer at American Media, Inc. (AMI) in Boca Raton, Florida.<1> AMI also publishes a tabloid called Sun where Robert Stevens, the first person who died from the mailings, worked. Only the New York Post and NBC News letters were actually found; the existence of the other three letters is inferred from the pattern of infection. (Some unconventional theories of the case do not posit five letters <2>). The anthrax found in the New York Post letter is reported to have become damp before being discovered.<3> Scientists examining the anthrax from the New York Post letter said it appeared as a coarse brown granular material looking like Purina Dog Chow.

Two additional anthrax letters, bearing the same Trenton postmark, were dated October 9, three weeks after the first mailing. The letters were addressed to two Democratic Senators, Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont. More potent than the first anthrax letters, the material in the Senate letters was a highly refined dry powder consisting of approximately one gram of nearly pure spores. Some reports described the material in the Senate letters as "weaponized" or "weapons grade" anthrax. The Daschle letter was opened by an aide on October 15, and the government mail service was shut down. The unopened Leahy letter was discovered in an impounded mail bag on November 16. The Leahy letter had been misdirected to the State Department mail annex in Sterling, Virginia, due to a misread Zip code; a postal worker there, David Hose, contracted inhalation anthrax"

Any further BioWeapon attacks will in all probability be done prior to significant elections in order to generate the most
productive results.
