Congressman Sensenbrenner voted to weaken House ethics rules in 2005, and then flip-flopped on the issue after realizing that people actually care about ethics in Congress. In light of the recent Washington scandals with Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff, Sensenbrenner’s opponent, Bryan Kennedy, is questioning Sensenbrenner’s support of making Congress less accountable to the public.
“No matter what party you are from, it is obvious that scandal is plaguing Washington DC, and I can’t imagine why Congressman Sensenbrenner wouldn’t want to fix that,” said Kennedy. He continued, “When Jim Sensenbrenner voted to weaken ethics rules, he voted against the families that he represents in Wisconsin, and that’s wrong. I’m glad to see he flip-flopped, but I question his motives. When real reform was introduced, he voted against it.”
Kennedy says that he is not surprised that Sensenbrenner voted to weaken the rules. “Just look at how he operates in Washington. He votes to help corporations in which he owns stock, and then watches his portfolio soar. With standards like that, he’s obviously not too concerned about ethics in government.”
Kennedy is running to replace Jim Sensenbrenner in Wisconsin’s 5th Congressional District. The 5th Congressional District includes all of Ozaukee and Washington counties, and portions of Milwaukee, Jefferson and Waukesha counties.
