I saw one of the talking heads looking at the polls this week, can't remember which person it was, but when he looked at the numbers of people who support Bush, support the war, and think the country is headed in the right direction, he concluded that they were all relatively rich people.

He then concluded that rich people tend to be happy and comfortable, regardless of the world spinning around them. Hence the solid (but shrinking) base of Bush supporters remaining.

2. We must give up some liberties in exchange for safety.

I've never been able to reconcile those two positions, but every freep I've ever known somehow managed to hold them both simultaneously. If you're willing to send soldiers off to a warzone to kill and die for your "freedoms", you ought to be willing to at least stand up for those freedoms at home.

Even if you accept the silly notion that our civil liberties make us less safe, isn't it a patriot's duty to take a few risks in defense of their nation's ideals? I mean- that's what they're praising the soldiers for. But they won't do it themselves- even on a tiny scale.
