Dixie Chicks need your support against right wing nutcases
Please vote LIKE IT. The song is obviously about the 'incident' where they said they were ashamed Bush was from Texas - and the nutjobs are voting Don't like it to censor their message off of radio and get rid fo their freedom of speech.

17. While I agree with their stance on Bush
I have heard from a few people who have crewed for the Dixie Chicks that they are not really nice people. The word Diva came up a few times. And before you get all huffy these are liberal working guys who toured with them.. you know, roadies. There is a saying that you can tell what kind of a person the "talent" is by the way they treat their crew. Apparently the Chicks didn't do too well... Just FYI

33. Fine with me.
If they don't want to hear it, then why should it be forced on them by people here who don't listen to it?

As a non-fan of country music, I don't really care.

But considering all the real attacks on First Amendment rights going on out there, this doesn't even rate.

37. The Dixie Chicks were the first overt attack on the 1st Amendment
by this administration ~ and because of that, they became a symbol of what this administration intended to do regarding any form of dissent.

You don't need to be a fan of country music. Just as you didn't need to be religious, to see the symbolism of Martin Luther King being attacked for utilizing his 1st Amendment rights.

The Dixie Chicks were at the top of the charts when Clear Channel banned them after they said they were ashamed that Bush was from Texas ~ so the right to hear them WAS taken away from many people obviously.

But it didn't stop there, Clear Channel took part in the equivalent of a book-burning event when rightwing 'activists' symbolically burned their CDs in public ~ the airwaves belong to all of us, don't they? By doing that, they trampled on all of our rights.

Other celebrities admitted back then that the attack on the Dixie Chicks silenced other celebrities many of whom normally would have spoken out. Sadly, at the time, they received little support except from ordinary people, not normally country music fans, who rushed to support them by buying their music.

So, whether you like them or not, or listen to country music or not, the Bush administration chose them as the most public proof that Ari Fleischer meant what he said by 'they better watch what they say'.

That's why it's important that they thrive in their career, imo, just so the fascists learn that we will not stand by and watch them silence those who use their 1st Amendment right to criticize the policies of their government.

It's not about the Dixie Chicks really, it's about our rights and about teaching THEM that we will not be silent.

39. Really?
Clear Channel, evil as they are, are within their rights to pull music.

The Government didn't overtly do anything to curtail the Dixie Chicks' rights.

Their album was still available in stores that weren't offended by their statement.

I don't approve of the way they were demonized, but there was no violation of their rights.

41. Isn't that how it always works, in the beginning? An assault in a public
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 03:55 PM by Catrina
way on the character of anyone who disagrees with the government, but not in a way that will get the population too upset because in the beginning, they haven't yet established their power?

I was on a rightwing board when the Dixie Chicks made their 'seditious' comment about George Bush (I hadn't yet found any democratic boards at that time). They said basicall what you said, only way more gleefully. 'How were their rights abused? You can still buy their CDs etc etc' ~ it is the intent of their actions that matter, and their intent was not to just silence the Dixie Chicks but to silence all dissenters ~ .

As far as Clear Channel is concerned, no, they had zero right to participate in a CD burning event. I believe that is against FCC rules. Of course there were no consequences for them from this administration ~ so I took that to mean (my right to do so) that the government was sponsoring them!

I could use your points to show why no one should have complained about Martin Luther King's right to speak out being abused also.

1) The law, evil as it was back then, was within its boundaries by throwing MLK in jail each time he criticized the govenment.

2) The Government didn't do anything overtly to curtail his rights.

3) His speeches were available to be heard by those who weren't offended by them.

4) I don't approve of the way he was demonized, but there was no violation of his rights.

I disagree with your assertions re the rights of the Dixie Chicks and mine to listen to them freely on airwaves that belong to the public, and of course I disagree that Martin Luther King's rights were not abused either.

I used MLK because that is what the Right will tell you about his rights being abused should you try to tell them they were. They still don't see it. After all, 'he freely led all those marches didn't he? Could he have done that in the Soviet Union?'

We'll have to agree to disagree ~ I believe that if anyone's rights are abused in the smallest way, (and I believe all of ours were when the Dixie Chicks were smeared, lied about, called traitors, banned and had their CDs publicly burned) that's the time to act, not to wait until the abuses grow.

Obviously your tolerance for such abuses is greater than mine. And that's fine too ~ I'm just glad they got support at the time, because had these tactics succeeded with them, it would have been continued and who knows where we would be by now.

It certainly influenced the producers of Sean Penn's movie when they cancelled his contract ~ and there are many other examples of the effect the assault on the Dixie Chicks had on free speech at the time. It's easy to forget it now, because of those who stood up for them. But most voices were pretty silent. So, it had the desired and intended effect ~ it was left to those of us who bought their music to fight back. I'm glad we did.

They were exercising free speech as well.

Or do you only approve of speech that you approve of?

50. How are we "infringing" on anyone's rights?
I do like country--although most commercial country radio is garbage. The Dixie Chicks produce fine music.

I just expressed my free speech. If they were truly hated, the poll would not be there. The billboards at CMT.COM have a few Chick-haters--but even more real fans.

52. Did you read what that person wrote?
This person compared the uproar over the Dixie Chicks to Martin Luther King's treatment and the Civil Rights Movement, and then tried to accuse me of some kind of hypocrisy.

A better comparison would be John Lennon's comments about the Beatles being "bigger than Jesus."

I'm just saying that organized protest against a popular music act is not infringing on their speech, nor is a corporate interest refusing to play their music infringing on their speech.

This person seems to think that speech is free for some, but not for others.

40. Not Ready to Make Nice
Emily Robison, Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines & Dan Wilson

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I’m not ready to make nice

58. I used to hate country music too
until I realised what they promote and play on CMT and country music stations isn't real country, it's fake country. Pop country, Walmart country. When I heard real country music I saw how beautiful and real it is. I suppose it's called Americana or altCountry or whatever. The Chicks sort of trandscend. They're pop-country, bluegrassy country, I just like them. Check out real country sometime, it's amazing.
