hey SKINNER! can we have shamrocks for tomorrow like the hearts
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 03:05 PM by Lerkfish
on valentine's day?

I'd donate some to get them to give out...speaking for myself, here. (maybe not enough time for you to work this up..sorry I just now thought of it!)

on edit: some people find this suggestion offensive. I'm sorry to those offended. it was just a thought.

6. for example, the story of patrick chasing the "serpents out of ireland"
actually refers to a holy war, as "serpents" was another name for the indigenous druid religious. the story has nothing to do with reptiles, and everything to do with the christians yet again attacking indigenous belief systems.
so, yes, there are some who probably wouldn't appreciate a shamrock.

25. Yes, indeed!
Quite a few Gods & Goddesses slipped into Christianity in disguise.

Hakim Bey uses a unique variant of the "Driving Out the Snakes" story. But it might upset some earnest neo-Pagans.

(My own readings have convinced me that "Celtic" is overused. But Early Irish Christianity did, indeed, have direct links to the African & Asian Churches.)

even if he can't accomplish it. In terms of Irish History (I'm Scotch/Irish/German/French!), most of their abuse does seems to be self-induced (Civil War(Protestant vs. Catholic)and Liver damage(!))

67. Shamrocks are great and will offend no one that I know of. I'm Irish, was
born there and may even be a descendent of the Druids for all I know. Christianity was brought to Ireland so it would not have been the Irish who enforced it anyway.

But the story of how it came to Ireland is that St.Patrick was brought to Ireland as a slave when he was a young boy and ended up tending sheep. After he left as an adult, he was converted to Christianity. He never forgot the people of Ireland and had come to love them so much, he came back to bring them Christianity ~

He used the Shamrock, which grew there naturally, to explain what 'trinity' meant. This could all be mythology, but since there is still a St. Patrick's Day, actually celebrating the 'invader' who brought Christianity to Ireland (without any oppression or war) I have never heard anyone in Ireland ever worry that the Shamrock might offend either them or their pagan ancestors. Even the pagans I know there rather like both St. Patrick and the Shamrock.

Maybe we're a little less easily offended than people here seem to be ~ or maybe after so many centuries St. Patrick and his shamrock are just a great excuse for a party, and who wants to be a party pooper?

So I wouldn't worry about the shamrock being offensive to anyone ~ and I think your idea was great ~ I loved the hearts too ~ :-)

War? 30 years and thousands of deaths due to religious division in a single country is not a Civil War?

As to the 2nd 'myth' that you are speaking about, I was merely reiterating what the author of this post had previously jested about.

54. "a single country"?
Sadly, it's not a single country. Six counties in Northern Ireland remain under British rule and send MPS to Parliament in London, not to the Dail, though the Dublin government has been granted an advisory role in recent years.

were ever Irish to begin with. Enlightening is certainly what you need!
if you don't know they were planted their by the crown- you don't know much. you do have a lot of reading to do. i don't know why people make wild assumptions here and post them as if they had a clue.
it's not considered a civil war when you fight those who've stolen your land.
