ENVISIONING ALTERNATIVES TO WAR Come on down this Saturday, March 18th, to the peace rally and commemoration marking the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. We'll be meeting at the site of good ol' Camp Casey Chico, Children's Park, 1st and Broadway, in downtown Chico starting at 3 p.m.
There will be great music by Sekund Naychur, John-Michael Sun, and Sherry Quammen, and the Washington, D.C. musical group Emma's Revolution! Also check out freestylin' spoken word artist Lorron, poet Rick Ditmanson, and candidates Phil Dynan, who is running against Rick Keene for State Assembly, and Bill Falzett, who is running against Wally Heger. (We invited Rick and Wally but they haven't gotten back to us!)
There will also be many informational tables by local groups presenting their visions of alternatives to war. At 5 p.m., we'll march through downtown Chico and then at dusk, hold a candlelight vigil to honor the many who have died in this war.
To date, more than 100,000 Iraqis, 206 Coalition troops, 311 contractors, and 2,309 U.S. troops have died, 240 of them from California. The most recent Californian to die was Bunny Long from Modesto, patriotic son of Cambodian immigrants, who died March 10th.
According to recent polls, 62% of Americans and 72% soldiers on the ground in Iraq think it's time to implement an exit strategy. We'd would like this to be an inclusive event, to which all are welcome no matter what their political views, so invite everyone you know. See you there.

ONE OF THE BRAVE FEW WHO HAS STOOD UP TO BUSH TO SPEAK AT CSU CHICO Joseph Wilson, former ambassador to Iraq, will speak at California State University, Chico on Wednesday, March 22, and present "The Three Great Debates over the War in Iraq." Wilson's lecture will be held at 7:30 pm in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium.
Wilson was a United States foreign service diplomat between 1976 and 1998. He bravely wrote an op-ed essay in the New York Times in July 2003 accused the Bush administration of exaggerating the Iraqi threat in order to justify war. Shortly thereafter, Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was outed as a CIA agent. So far, the only response has been the grand jury indictment of Lewis Libby, chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.
As acting ambassador to Iraq in 1991, right before the first Gulf War, Wilson publicly defied Saddam Hussein by giving refuge to more than 100 U.S. citizens at the embassy and in the homes of U.S. diplomats. Saddam Hussein was threatening to execute anyone who harbored foreigners. Wilson addressed journalists wearing a hangman's noose instead of a necktie. He later told the Washington Post newspaper that the message to Saddam Hussein was, "If you want to execute me, I'll bring my own fucking rope."
General admission tickets for $15 are available at the University Box Office, 530-898-6333, and at the door for $17.
