Wife-beheader wants freedom - Not in Jail anymore, but wants more freedom
Wife-beheader wants freedom
Out of mental hospital, still under court scrutiny
BY SHEILA MCLAUGHLIN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

HAMILTON - Every two years, Raymond Tanner sits in a Butler County courtroom hoping to persuade a judge that he's free of the psychological demons that made him behead his wife on Valentine's Day 1990.
< snip >

"You feel like you need some kind of control yourself, and I honestly feel I would have more control if he'd gone to prison," Cleaver said, frustrated after the hearing. "Here ... all you can rely on is psychiatrists, psychologists and a damn good judge. And, they are not all good."

Tanner, a Fairfield meat cutter who was found not guilty by reason of insanity for decapitating his wife with a kitchen knife, is asking again to be released from any court control.

Now 49, he spent six years in a mental institution until a judge released him in 1996. He's been under court scrutiny in varying degrees since. By law, his case will be reviewed every two years for the rest of his life - unless a judge decides to set him free.

His lawyer, J. Gregory Howard, says Tanner is better and shouldn't have to attend court-ordered counseling sessions anymore. He should be free to live where he pleases, instead of the Dayton area, as the court ordered.

1. Insane or not, once you cut off your wife's head...
you should remain in some kind of state custody, forever.

That's a no-brainer.

Pun intended.

3. Wonder if he would have gotten the same consideration if he had cut off
his male boss's head?

Somehow, I think not.

5. "Somehow, I think not." Of course you don't.

6. Too bad his wife doesn't have the freedom he is seeking....
I think he should be in prison for beheading his wife, and I mean life in prison. Now he is complaining because he is under some scrutiny but is walking around basically free. No sympathy for him on my part.

7. Why do you think this is appropriate to be posted here at all
let alone GD? I'm curious about your thinking process on this, and your logic.

8. well
If it was politically charged it would be in Politics, which did not fit.

It is however a window into crime and punishment and how f*cked up our society is.

I wonder why some things are posted here myself at times - like if it is christian bashing it should be in Religion, if it is about Kerry it should be in Politics, etc and so on.

We live in a sick society - and exposing that (like exposing fake christians) has a place in a general discussion of society. Perhaps we need a sub group called - crime (in which case, it would mostly be about bush...)

Besides, people seem more interested in these types of stories (Human Interest) - of course I could start up one of 100 or more threads on dean and what he said about some subject or other - but that is usually covered pretty well here.

We post stories about the iraq war, including the photos of dead kids. We post photos about people dying, killers who got the death penalty (and subsequent details), and so on.

As an X cop I gravitate towards crime and punishment stories (Though today I did one on Fema and one on the FBI from Govexec). Crime is a part of our society and world, and as such is a general item to discuss.

9. Lock him up and throw away the key
Not as retribution, but for our protection.

Whether its in a hospital or a prison, just as long as he's not out there.
