Gallup: 39% still believe Saddam was personally involved with 9/11

Three Years On: Survey Shows Misinformation on Iraq Endures

NEW YORK Despite one official finding after another, debunking the involvement of Saddam Hussein's Iraq in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, nearly one in four Americans continue to embrace that notion. And nearly 6 in 10 are fairly certain, contrary to most evidence, that Iraq did have WMDs before the war started.

A Gallup poll released today, conducted March 10-12 on a wide range of war-related issues, found that 39% still believe Saddam was personally involved in the 9/11 attacks. Shortly before the war began, 51% held that view, but that was before the many official, and media, reports to the contrary. Yet a high number still cling to the view.

Previous surveys have revealed that about the same number or more falsely believe that some of the 9/11 hijackers were Iraqis.

In a similar vein, Gallup reports today, "Though no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq after the invasion, today 57% of Americans express some degree of certainty that such weapons or programs to develop them were in Iraq just before the fighting began -- 29% feel definite about it, and another 28% think the weapons were there, though they have some doubt." Another 22% say Iraq "might have had" WMDs.

3. Interesting....
I think 2/3 of those 39% just can't bear to confront the fact that their government could lie to them about something so serious as a causus belli. The other 1/3 are too stupid or too committed to all things Bush to change their worldview.

30. The older generation..........
my Mom included, grew up in a time when they believed they could trust their elected leaders to do the right thing and not lie to them. Times have changed. I try to convince my Mother that bush is an evil, lying piece of shit, to no avail. She continues to believe that the president (except that Bill Clinton!) is a man of honesty and integrity. We're never going to convince these people that bush is a lying sack of shit.

It reminds me of the Simpson spoof of it. "Democrats" cause cancer or something like that.

they only actually get a fraction of the propaganda provided by either of them. Like every third word - "terror", "Saddam", "terror"...

26. Don't be surprised if many still don't know about the Maine
And the majority doesn't have a clue what the U.S.S. Maine means.

Propaganda works. It is excellent to control the masses and even though this is the small board, it is a very small majority who has a little understanding of what is going on.

Milosevic died and I looked into his trial. Just to see and it was all propaganda as well. Did you know that the famous picture of the concentration camp was a fake and that it was a refuge camp which had a small barb wired fence and the photographer set it up to get his shot. That was the casus belli they fed up. I'm not saying that he is a good guy, but indeed Yugoslavia smell like propaganda as well and an evil Serbia is probably just the view we were fed and believed...

31. You're right, and I remember the fake photo story
Remember when Marshall Tito ran Yugoslavia. It was probably the best managed of all the Communist countries. The various factions where not at each other's throat, and the country had a decent economy. Now the whole area is a total wreck......similar to Iraq.

32. Also
"Propaganda works. It is excellent to control the masses and even though this is the small board, it is a very small majority who has a little understanding of what is going on."

Speaking of not knowing what's going on, there are many on here that also don't have a clue about NAFTA, GATT, WTO, GATS, CAFTA, our current account crisis, and other related trade issues. Many even support the repuke side and still believe these deals are really "Free Trade". David Ricardo is rolling over in his grave.

36. What I mean is that they are better informed
Personally I am getting used to noticing that things are quite different the moment you start to really look into them.

NAFTA, WTO etc. are sold on the idea of Free Trade, but they fail to mention that Free Trade means freedom for the large corporations to move their operations to the cheapest possible place which leads to limiting the chances of local competition, since smaller companies cannot afford to move parts of their operations to third world countries and therefore the big corporations can remain large and even extend their size. That is the idea behind Free Trade, it is absolutely not intented to allow a Nicaraguan company to sell their products in Canada. It's about Walmart's ability to extend into Nicaragua.

The biggest obstacle we have besides the governments are the global corporations and they exist thanks to the stock market which is still overpriced many times and therefore allows those companies to grow beyond a viable size and become power in their own right. If your stock is priced at five times your value it means that you can pay four times the worth a competitor to eliminate them from the market and still show a profit. It also means that you don't have to worry about your internal efficency. The whole concept of transnational corporation which are publicly owned is the root cause of many problems.

The trade deficit and overall debt is not a crisis as far as the banks and corporations are concerned, they want the US to borrow as much as possible and since George W. Bush comes from a banking background, he is well aware that the deficit is not a problem from the view of the Wall Street banking community and that the larger the debt becomes, the more powerful they become, so once again their is no incentive of making the debt smaller.

25. This sounds like an episode of Family Feud
Remember that show? Didn't matter whether or not the answers were correct, just that they correctly predicted what a survey of inbred half-wits would respond.

"Where are polar bears found?"

"Survey Says: Antarctica, 39%"

My guess is that it's the same 39%.
