Senators call for .xxx domain

March 17, 2006 - 10:23AM

WASHINGTON (AP) A lot of cities have red light districts -- areas where adult entertainment can be found. But should the Internet have such an area? snip

The .xxx domain would become the home of any pornographic Web sites on the Internet. The lawmakers and other supporters of the plan say that would make it easier for parents to filter out material they don't want their children to see.

But it's unclear whether the measure would win wide support. Ironically, Christian conservatives and the pornography industry both oppose the bill.

1. From what I've heard, many in the porn industry have been lobbying FOR it
The idea is that an .xxx domain would be easier for "net nanny" apps to filter out, meaning less harassment from the talibangelicals and the elimination of the main talking-point against their businesses.

2. Anyone know why Christians conservatives would be opposed?
I kinda thought they would consider this one a no-brainer.

within a week of attending the Promise Keepers conference. Its an epidemic among Christian fathers.

Porn is physiologically addictive as adrenaline is released during viewing. Arterburn, 2000.

20% of the Internet is pornographic content. Dvorak, Smart Business Magazine, 2002.

The population of the U.S. is at about 250 million, yet over 300 million X-rated videos have been distributed in our neighborhoods. Laurie Hall, Affair of the Mind 1996.

7. It would be a no brainer
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 05:00 PM by Jack Rabbit
The Right Wing Fundies, the porn industry and Jack Rabbit are pleased to be in rare agreement on this one.

The latter party expresses a qualification. He supports the issues only as long as no one tries to abuse their power and put an .xxx domain on websites like The Nation, Huffington Post, Democratic Underground or, for that matter, StormFront or Free Republic.

4. I've always thought this was a terrific idea...its not a cure all
but I think its a good start. I'll have to read the arguments as to why the pornographers and the fundies don't support it.
