In "Tell Them I Didn't Cry" Jackie Spinner recounts her experience in 2004 as a war reporter in Baghdad for the Washington Post. Her twin sister, Jenny Spinner, shares how she and the rest of their family dealt with Jackie's reporting assignment and the effect it had on her relationship with her sister. During the presentation, the sisters read portions of the book and answer questions from the audience. This event was hosted by Jenny Spinner's alma mater, Millikin University, in Decatur, Illinois.

It's the topic of his new book, "Crusader Nation: The United States in Peace and the Great War, 1898-1920." In it, Mr. Traxel details the ways in which various groups struggled to cast aside Victorian restraint, strive for economic reform, and expand their global empire. This event was hosted by National Constitution Center in Pennsylvania.

David Traxel is also the author of "1898: The Birth of the American Century" and is currently and associate professor of history at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Mr. Cook had a studio in Charleston, South Carolina where he worked during the war until early 1864 when he had to flee to Columbia, South Carolina. Bob Zeller also discusses other photographers including Alexander Gardner and Mathew Brady. "The Blue and Gray in Black and White" is a comprehensive study of civil war photography.

Bob Zeller is author of "The Civil War In Depth" volumes one and two. These books contain stereo or 3D images from the Civil War and come with special viewing glasses. He is founder and president of the non-profit organization, the Center for Civil War Photography, Inc. and lives in North Carolina.

Historian John Lewis Gaddis categorizes the Cold War as a neccesary conflict that settled divisive world issues. He makes the case in his new book, " The Cold War: A New History." The author calls the Cold War a "movement from fear to hope," and describes the roles played by Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Margaret Thatcher during the Cold War. The author had access to newly-released documents from the archives of the former Soviet Union and China.

John Lewis Gaddis is the author of numerous books including "The United States and the Origins of the Cold War, 1941 - 1947" and "We Now Know: Rethinking Cold War History." He is currently a history professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

6. Take It Back: Our Party, Our Country, Our Future

From Publishers Weekly
An intelligent, carefully outlined strategy to seize power from the Republicans and restore it to its rightful place slightly left of center, this book (despite Carville's "Ragin' Cajun" claim to gonzo liberalism) is remarkably reasonable and cleverly calculated to appeal to a broad spectrum of Americans. Carville and Begala have a solid grasp of the issues that concern the majority of citizens: moral values, political corruption, taxes, health care, energy issues and, of course, the war in Iraq. They are most persuasive when arguing for seemingly common-sense policies: their energy plan-conservation, environmental remediation and making a "real commitment to alternative fuels"-is based on the handling of the energy crisis of the 1970s that saw the U.S. cut energy use and oil imports while growing the GDP. Regarding health care, the authors argue for allowing employers to buy into the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program, which offers 180 different plans to 9 million government employees. Some of the authors' arguments are harder to swallow; for example, the extremely speculative notion that had Al Gore been elected president, 9/11 could have been averted. And criticism of Republican leadership often devolves into name-calling and mudslinging. (Jack Abramoff, in a stroke of timely luck, receives his own section titled "The King of Republican Sleaze.") That aside, Carville's and Begala's book is a refreshing entry into a field long overcrowded by polarized, pedantic screeds.

Douglas Brinkley is a Clark professor of history and director of the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Tulane University in Louisiana. He is the author of "The Boys of Pointe du Hoc," and "Tour of Duty" and co-authored "The Mississippi and the Making of a Nation" with Stephen Ambrose.

During the talk, Mr. Babun talks about how his father began working with Fidel Castro and argues that there is a wide gap between the official history of the revolution as described in Cuban history books and the story of what really happened. He says that Fidel Castro went back on his promise to create a democracy after the revolution and it is this betrayal that drives most anti-Castro forces within Cuba and the United States. He ran the Food for Peace Program under President John Kennedy and was named the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization by President Bill Clinton in 1997. Sen. McGovern was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 2000.

He analyzed the problems displaced survivors of Hurricane Katrina are facing today, and debated if the storm was caused by God. This event was hosted by Eso Won, an African American bookstore in Los Angeles, California.

Michael Eric Dyson is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Author and journalist Steven Greenhut spoke at the Independent Institute in Oakland, California about his book “Abuse of Power: The Government Misuse of Eminent Domain.” Timothy Sanderfur, an attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation, joins the author in discussing the various ways the government has abused the power of eminent domain in the pursuit of seizure of property from private owners. The panelists’ discussion ranges from the time of American colonization to present day. They also talk about the 2005 Supreme Court case Kelo v. New London in which Mr. Sandefur wrote a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of members in the Kelo party. The discussion is moderated by David Theroux, president and founder of the Independent Institute.

Steven Greenhut is the Senior Editiorial Writer for the Orange County Register. "Abuse of Power" is his first book. Timothy Sandefur is an attorney with the Pacific Legal Foundation.

Harriet McBryde Johnson has practiced civil rights law in Charleston, South Carolina for over thirteen years. She served the City of Charleston Democratic Party for eleven years, first as secretary, then as chair and is a contributor to The New York Times Magazine.

Mike Mullane recounts his experience as a member of the first group of space shuttle astronauts in his memoir "Riding Rockets." On February 1, 1978, the author joined a crew that included the first American woman and the first African American in space. Four of the members would later die as a result of the Challenger disaster. Mr. Mullane details some of the challenges NASA faced with the space shuttle program including how to address the concerns of his female colleagues. This event was hosted by Borders in New York City.

Mike Mullane flew 134 combat missions in Vietnam and completed three space missions after being selected in the first group of space shuttle astronauts.

Karl Fleming and Nick Kotz on Civil Rights Movement Reporting

Journalists Nick Kotz and Karl Fleming reported on the Civil Rights movement during the 1960s. Both men have written books about their experiences covering the movement and they spoke at the Los Angeles Public Library about those books. The men discuss their experiences in the segregated South in the 1960s and 70s. Karl Fleming, author of “Son of the Rough South: An Uncivil Memoir,” tells of being chased out of a Southern town by an angry mob, while Nick Kotz, author of “Judgment Days: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Laws That Changed America,” discusses the relationship between President Johnson and Martin Luther King, Jr. as it developed throughout the 1960s. Both writers talk about how their Southern upbringing allowed them to blend in with the bigots of the South, but did little to alleviate the dangers of the situations they covered.

Karl Fleming began his career as a court reporter for the Daily Times of Wilson, North Carolina, and later worked as a reporter for the Atlanta Constitution. He reported on the Civil Rights movement for Newsweek during the 1960s. He was photographed on May 17, 1966, after being beaten by rioters during the Watts riots in Los Angeles. Nick Kotz is the author of several books, all dealing with social justice and civil rights. He was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for his reporting on unsanitary conditions in meatpacking plants.
