Pregnant Teen Waitress Gets $1,000 Tip
Pregnant Teen Waitress Gets $1,000 Tip

The Associated Press
Saturday, March 18, 2006; 5:22 AM

ROANOKE, Va. -- The couple at one of waitress Amanda Newkirk's many tables seemed ordinary enough. The woman ordered a turkey burger, fries and two Coors Lights. The man had a bacon cheeseburger and sweet tea.

Their bill came to $26.35. They left Newkirk $1,000.

Newkirk, seven months pregnant and teary with excitement, read the handwritten note on the check: "Keep the change! Have a great day."

The 19-year-old thought it had to be a joke. But the manager at Ruby Tuesday confirmed the authenticity of the ten $100 bills with a counterfeit-detection pen.

6. The woman who left the tip called the manager a couple of days later...
... said she didn't need the money, but instead gave it to someone who needed it.

4. so glad she really got the money
a few years back i'm sure you recall the cocktail waitress tipped $10K in a stripper joint

in the end the dude sobered up and reversed the charge

if they really want you to get it, they'll leave cash

too easy to have second thoughts in the morning w. credit

12. Great story
I love tipping big. Maybe that's why I'll never be rich. Just the same, my personal fantasy is to be wealthy enough so that I can take a cross-country, leaving a trail of $100.00 tips for cups of coffee. Waiting tables is God's work.

15. Bless you
And I'm much more likely to leave a big tip in some mom-n-pop diner, than a big fancy resturant.

Much more likely to eat at the diner's too.

Waiting tables is God's work.

Damn straight.

16. Me too...
If a member of the wait-staff is especially friendly or laughs easily, I tend to tip large.
I can't afford it, but it makes me feel good, and I know it makes them feel appreciated.

It's the little stupid stuff like this, that gives me joy.

19. I've got a similar fantasy
I'd love to be rich enough to be able to give someone a few million dollars completely anonymously with two restrictions.

1. They can invest the money and do whatever they want with the interest, but can't touch the original amount.
2. When they no longer need the money (death, out of debt, graduated college, etc) they have to do the same thing - give it to a random person with the same 2 restrictions.

22. The donor has her own interesting story
She's a 28 year old widow.
'Dogan, whose husband died last year, said she's a shopaholic and could have easily spent the money at a nearby mall. But she decided to put it to better use.'
