Finally, God DOESN'T get the credit!
After countless articles in which people thank God for saving them from the flood, fire, tornado, hurricane, plague, et al., this guy puts it into a more accurate perspective:

"People say God saves you. I find it hard to believe. Why would he save me while he was busy drowning 240,000 in a tsunami?"

Sid Levin, right, who survived a crash in which a truck fell off an overpass and onto his car in November, leaves Swedish Medical Center Friday. His wife, Renae, and stepson, Mark Samuelson, watch.

1. great quote
humble quote - it is funny a friend (religious) took issue with the phrase "There for the Grace of God go I" when people use the expression when talking about someone else in dire circumstances ... I always read that phrase to be an expression of humility in recognizing how easy it would be to find oneself in the same circumstance and as an expression of compassion due to that recognition. Granted I don't live, work or worship with fundamentalists - thus I only hear the phrase used as I mention above. This friend, however, dwells, lives, worships with fundamentalists and hears the phrase used as extreme arrogance - as in "Because God Blesses ME, this would never happen" - ala it must be something wrong with that person in the dire circumstances because clearly God didn't bless them. That use of the phrase rather shook me as its ugly, selfish, self righteous tone. HOwever with all the talk of GOD being behind tragedies and savings from tragedies (esp from the likes of Pat Robertson) certainly resonate with my friends' world view of what is meant by the phrase by some, when they use it.

2. OH yes! That phrase makes me crazy, too.
"There but for the arbitrary blessing of God in making me white, wealthy, pampered, educated and male, go I."

Ugh.

3. Different situations, same topic
I've always wanted to hear "I would have scored the touchdown, but I think God raised that blade of grass that got me on the 5 yard line."

And one I did hear on a Howard Stern style local radio show by a caller "First I want to thank God for giving me the ablity to dial and speak through the telephone today."

5. Talk about a dry sense of humor...
:wow:

Maybe this one person had more of a reason to contribute, in God's eyes, than those 239,999 others?
