LIBERAL HEXUM LAUNCHES:
311 singer/guitarist, Nick Hexum, has established a non-profit organization called 'Liberal Hexum' dedicated to supporting various environmental and social causes. The group's first goal is to fund research efforts and raise awareness of the effects of global warming. Global warming is the direst environmental problem that humans and animal species are facing today. (Please visit the website to see how to donate or become involved).

"The consensus of independent scientists believes that CO2 emissions are leading to rising air and water temperatures resulting in catastrophic hurricanes and the loss of habitat for many species," says Nick, "This is a problem that humans caused and humans can reverse. The first steps are to understand the issue, spreading awareness, and supporting research efforts to solve the problem."

Why "Liberal" Hexum?
From Nick:
"A disturbing trend in society today is the use of the word "liberal" as a derogatory label. I believe this is due to widespread misunderstanding of the true definition of the word.

According to Webster’s dictionary a liberal is “one who is open-minded or not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional, or established forms or ways.” To describe someone as liberal is to say that they are a person “having social views favoring reform and progress, tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition.”

If society rejects people who are liberal then by definition society is favoring people who are closed minded, resistant to progress and reform, and intolerant of change. Is that really what we want? I believe that all of the great leaders in history could only be described as liberal. Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Gandhi & Martin Luther King were people who went against the conservative status quo of the time for what they believed was right.

In our quest to raise awareness about global warming and other environmental issues, I also hope to raise awareness of the true meaning of the word "liberal" and to help remove the stigma from the word."

A MESSAGE FROM NICK:
For our first fund raising event I'm seeking sponsors to make a per mile donation of the 26.2 mile Los Angeles Marathon that I'll be running in this Sunday, March 19th. This will be my first marathon. I'd only be guessing at how long it will take but I know I will finish.

Anyone who pledges a dollar or more per mile becomes a member of 'Liberal Hexum' and anyone who pledges five dollars or more per mile will be considered a benefactor and receive a Liberal Hexum t-shirt (signed by me if you like!)

We have retained legal representation to form the nonprofit organization and he has stated that he feels confident we will obtain tax exempt status and all donations will be tax deductible once the paperwork goes through.

Donations can be made by Paypal or personal check.
Please email us here to make a pledge: liberalhexum@earthlink.net
Tell us your name and the amount you can pledge. After the race we will contact you with payment information via email. Thank you so much for your time and support.
Nick
http://liberalhexum.org

This marathon is tomorrow. Please if you are interested, make a pledge to liberalhexum@earthlink.net based on the information above or just make a flat rate donation - this org. will also focus on other liberal issues as well, in the future.

Thank you and keep kicked for Nick and all that he does!
Faye

311 Singer Nick Hexum Hits The Road To Send Bush On His Way
10.04.2004

Hexums For Kerry Tour marks vocalist's first time on the road without 311.

311 singer Nick Hexum is following his own advice: Don't stay home.

Stirred by his dissatisfaction with President George W. Bush, Hexum has scheduled a tour of swing states with his brother, singer Zack Hexum, and aptly titled it the Hexums for Kerry Tour.

"If Bush wins, it'll be a sad day, but I'll at least know we did our best towards a plan for world peace." — 311's Nick Hexum

Stuff from my high school days, but politically themed," Nick said. "We're learning 'Clampdown' from London Calling, which is about fascism, and about how raging patriotism can lead toward terrible things. We're doing XTC's 'Earn Enough for Us,' which is about the middle class having so much trouble. Then we'll also do 'Amber,' because we want it to be an enjoyable music experience."

"The reason I wanted to get involved is because if Bush is re-elected, it's basically saying what he did was OK, to lead a country into war based on a falsified document that he knew was not true," Hexum said. "If he's reelected, that makes us more of a target. If we get Kerry in there, it says, 'Look, this is a new America. We're going to be hard on terrorists when we know they're terrorists.' "

Nick has little tolerance for Republicans who argue that Bush has saved the Iraqi people from a tyrannical dictator who killed 5,000 Kurds.

"First of all, we've just killed about 15,000 of them doing this," the singer said. "Second of all, if you look at tyrants around the world, there's much more urgent civil-rights crises. If that was our concern, we'd be in Sudan, Burma, North Korea, whatever. The truth is, they'll deny it to the end, but the oil has to have something to do with it. We don't care about other places where people are being oppressed unless they've got something we want."

I think I've found my new best friend!

3. More from Nick today:
Why I'm so concerned about global warming...

Five facts that should alarm everyone:

1) Last year was the hottest year since the thermometer was invented.
2) Humans put out 7 Billion tons more carbon into the atmosphere each year than the earths plant life can consume.
3) Last year the hurricanes started earlier, there were more of them and they had record breaking force, and Wilma was the strongest hurricane ever recorded. Hurricanes are powered by warm water. Among independent scientists there is little disagreement that the strength of these record breaking hurricanes are caused by CO2 emissions from automobiles and factories.
5) All costal areas could be in urgent danger of terrible storms while inland areas could be headed for catastrophic droughts.

As I do more and more research on the topic I'm honestly scared that people are turning a blind eye to a pending global crisis. While this is not a fun topic it's something we all need to consider.

As I'm nearing my 36th birthday I really have felt the need to make more of a difference in the world. After the incredible experience that was 3-11 day I've never felt so loved or felt such a sense of accomplishment just by helping to bring so many people together. That was a day I'll never forget. I want to thank everyone who made it possible. Now, I feel so fulfilled again by the response to my fundraiser. Liberalhexum.org is off to such an incredible start. I'm really moved by the support. So many people have pledged so generously. I just want to say thank you to everyone for the encouraging words and thank you to so many people for getting involved. I hope that people see that this is a situation that is likely to effect every living thing on earth if something is not done. I may not be able to make much of a difference but spreading awareness on this issue makes me feel like I'm at least making a dent.

With hope,
Nick

10. And then we get this guy.
http://bbs.311.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52124

I'm not sold on global warming, and I'd consider myself more educated in the sciences than the average person probably. I'm not saying this in an attempt to refute global warming by any means, but is there a reason why you keep referring to them "independent" scientists?

How do you know that this isn't the natural progression of the universe? How did the Earth warm up to the point that bacteria could grow in the ocean and multiply and eventually lead to us? My guess is that if we had temperature data over the last 10,000 years, there would probably be an exponential relationship between time and temperature. Why? I dunno, I'm no scientist.

sometimes i am amazed at some of the points of view of 311 fans...maybe it's just me but i always thought a 311 fan would be on the same social/political level as the band....but i guess i was wrong :eyes: it's like my Baptist neo-con dad listening to System of A Down. it's an oxymoron.

see the response to your post today.

Nick Hexum's the real deal. He campaigned with Kerry.

Plus, 311 has great music, and my daughter goes to every one of their performances when they're appearing anywhere near us.

Apparently, they are phenomenal in live concerts, as well. :) MKJ
