DUBAI: Britain has told the United States that it will not take part in any armed action against Iran’s nuclear sites, according to diplomatic sources in London. Already facing huge public criticism for his participation in the Iraq war, Prime Minister Tony Blair is seeking to distance himself from America’s belligerent rhetoric towards Iran.(...)

Last week, Britain announced it was pulling 800 men out of Iraq one tenth of its force there. This is seen as a signal that Britain is seeking to limit its involvement in America’s wars, rather than take on additional commitments.

Carefully monitoring opinion in Washington, British officials have noted with alarm that the advocates of confrontation with Iran, both inside and outside the administration, have triumphed over the few brave souls who dared argue in favour of dialogue and engagement.

Analysts in London are now convinced that Washington’s real aim is "regime change" in Tehran, an ambition which goes far beyond merely delaying or halting Iran’s nuclear programme."

9. There is a report that Britain wants new talks

Britain favors drawing the United States into new talks with Iran over its nuclear program and may float such a plan Monday at a high-level diplomatic meeting outside the U.N. Security Council, a U.N. diplomat said Saturday.

The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the strategy was confidential, said the British proposal would have the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- including the United States -- sit at the same table with the Iranians, along with Germany.

The British are planning to float the proposal at a meeting with France, Germany, Russia, China and the United States, the diplomat told The Associated Press.

The five nations would offer Tehran a new but unspecified package of incentives in exchange for a negotiated settlement on Iranian plans for uranium enrichment, which can create both fuel and the fissile core of nuclear warheads, the diplomat said.

Go watch V for Vendetta. It's based in England of the future. The back story pretty much blames the US and 'America's Wars' for the situation the world of their time is in. Kind of scary, and it makes enough sense to believe it.

That reminds me of a documentary I watched on the BBC a few nights ago on how there was nearly a facist coup in Britain during Harold Wilson's terms of office. Apparently sections of MI5 colluded with the head of the CIA (worried about the rise of the left in post war Britain...i know, all that scary free healthcare!!!) and worked with parts of the British establishment to overthrow the democratically elected labour goverment. I was shocked! you kind of expect it in S America but not in Blighty!

That documentary you speak of sounds very similar to the premise of "A Very British Coup" which was shown over here on PBS about 10 years ago. Harold Wilson always said that MI5 and the Secret Service were trying to depose him - it sounds like he may very well have been right.
Fuckers can't stand left-wing governments - look what Kissinger and the CIA did to Chile, and look what we tried to do to Chavez a couple of years ago.

They just nailed the true situation, art imitating life, I suppose! The PM in the series was from Sheffield - a bluff northerner, (it seems) loosely based on Harold Wilson, although the fictional guy was an ex=steelworker, not a college prof like Wilson.
