Nearly 10,000 anti-war protesters gather for march through S.F.

Saturday, March 18, 2006

Nearly 10,000 enthusiastic anti-war protesters stepped off from San Francisco's Civic Center at 12:30 this afternoon on an afternoon-long trek through San Francisco to mark the third anniversary of the war in Iraq.

The protest was one of hundreds being held throughout the country as anti-war activists worked to keep up the drumbeat against the U.S. military presence in Iraq.

"Because of the air attacks and because of people's growing dissatisfaction with where their tax dollars are being spent'' there's plenty of support for the anti-war effort, said Rachel Hereford, 22, one of the coordinators of Saturday's march.

A stage was set up, festooned with a banner saying "Bring the Troops Home Now! End Colonial Occupation." The marchers planned to walk through the Tenderloin, through the downtown shopping district near Union Square and then back through the South of Market before returning to the Civic Center for a rally with speakers, singers and street theater groups.

13. The boots were at the Walnut Creek rally
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 11:44 PM by Gormy Cuss
There were 100 boots, each with the name of a California soldier or Marine lost in Iraq. The display was set up in the Veterans' Memorial Park.

The Chronicle claims there were 3000 at the Walnut Creek (East Bay) rally -- I would have guessed half that amount but it was a good turnout.

On edit: those are in addition to the 10K in SF. There was also a rally planned for Palo Alto.

15. Thanks for posting the pix!
There were plenty of veterans of Vietnam War protests, including singer Country Joe McDonald, former Republican congressman -- and current candidate for Congress -- Pete McCloskey and Democratic Rep. George Miller of Martinez, who was elected in 1974.

The Walnut Creek march and rally were very orderly and laid back with a few exceptions, like when Country Joe lead the crowd in a Fish Cheer. Gimme an F! Gimme a U!...
B-)
