Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 01:52 AM by tomreedtoon
"I lost my arm for Bush's war, and all he gave me was this purple Band-Aid."

I seriously don't know what to think about this. The people I know who've had things like this happen prefer not to call attention to it, to try to live their lives and not make people think they're "special" or "handicapped." He may be doing this to help The Cause, and that's good for everybody...but won't he suffer emotional fallout afterwards?

Understand, I'm not criticizing what he's done, or what he may do. But wars will come and go - this one included - and he'll have to go back to living a life afterwards.

I don't even understand your point. The guy's going to suffer because he showed everyone his stump? Why? Don't you think any suffering will be due to the fact that his arm got blown off in the first place? Are you sure it's not you who is bothered emotionally by this?

43. I'm bothered that he may be risking his future.
I mean his future after turning himself into a political statement. There is life outside politics; I don't know if you heard. And a person who suffers a handicap has to work hard to fit into life again; it's really easy to lose who you are along with the limb.

30. It's very harsh
But people handle disabilities in different ways. It makes me a little uncomfortable to think he's using himself as an "exhibit". But the protest & sign is probably his way of finding some meaning in what's happened, so he can prevent the same thing from happening to other young soldiers. It's very courageous.

31. you're saying he should not warn people what war really is about?
You're saying it would be better if he'd not discourage people to support war?

Following your advice will make sure wars will continue to "come and go" - is that what you want?

40. To be expected
But I doubt that recruiters really want kids to think about the fact that we have a president, vice president, and secy of defense who don't think twice about sending our troops into harms way.

War is the first resort for them, not the last resort, and you can bet if any of those 3 had actually had the balls to face combat or lose a limb they wouldn't be so reckless with our troops safety.

49. Freeper extraordinaire
An angry war vet who thinks we lost the war in Vietnam because of the peacenik 'hippies', 'librals' and 'wimpy' pacifists.

G.R. Quinn has been mistaken for a performance artist: His ultra-right agitating is sometimes so blunt that it reads like parody. But he means every word of the succinct screeds on his handwritten signs. Some of his standbys are "Hunt the Whales," "Cut the Rainforest," and "Janet Reno: Nazi Witch." Although he carries incendiary messages, Quinn isn't exactly the typical in-your-face protester. He's more the nagging, persistent voice in the wilderness, the gadfly in the ointment of Chapel Hill liberalism.

Quinn does more than wave signs at passing motorists on Franklin Street. He's also a prolific letter-to-the-editor writer and radio talk-show caller, and he attends many a left-wing function to make sure that at least one countervailing opinion is voiced. He delights in needling liberals about what he says are their inconsistencies and hypocrisies. Quinn's latest sign was a send-off to his nemesis: "Goodbye Clinton: The Big Creep." Will he wind down his one-man show now that a Republican is in the White House? "No, not at all," Quinn tells us. "I just got married, and my wife is trying to redirect my causes," he says with a laugh. "But there's still a lot of left-wingers around that need to be exposed."

http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A15756

And I've seen his name in relation to that freeper site -- his favorite is to dis Cindy Sheehan; he's been noted int he press as carrying signs that read "Sheehan Bride of bin Laden". He's decided to park himself over at the PBS Now boards, and frankly, he's a pain in the ass. The bit above hits the nail on the head and shows the depths to which he will sink....he's so in your face that it reads like parody but, sadly, it's not.

In Washington, G.R. Quinn, 54, of Bethesda, Md., held a sign across from the White House reading: "God Bless the Enola Gay," referring to the B-29 that dropped the first bomb. Nearby, about three dozen peace activists declared President Bush was not doing enough for nuclear disarmament.
