I am trying to get some scholarships in order for my graduating daughter
One of the most popular places to do that is at fastweb.
You enter all of your information in and they match up the scholarships that you have the best chance of getting.
However...everytime I log in to check on something, I get inundated with requests for Army and Navy.
They are like pedophiles drawn to the playground...they find anywhere able bodies cannon fodder will be and then lurk in the background trying to snag the ones that are unsuspecting.
Sheesh.

1. There are several ways to get a scholarship.
If your daughters grades were not very good it is more difficult. A son of a friend of mine is getting his medical PHD in the army. He had to sign up for eight years and will never have to go to Iraq. I suggest you contact several universities to see what is available. You would be surprised to learn how much scholarship money goes unused.

2. They tell lots of these kids they will never have to go to Iraq
and they get to go anyway. I would never take a recruiter's word for anything.

Did you see Farenheit 9/11? Recruiters are exposed as liars in that film.

4. boy are you right!
They'd love to get the mits on a newly graduated physician! I should know! I won't go into any details, but I'm sure they'll be chomping at the bit to get the new physician in one of their MSC (Medical Service Corp.) units. Fresh meat! Oh yeah ...

Enough said. Stay aware and be VERY cautious and don't let them fool you. Even if this is in writing (their "promise"), they can always change things as they "own" you until you are OUT. *sigh*

3. Her grades are excellent
She has a 4.0 GPA.
However, she is tied for #2 at this time in her class rankings.
I wouldn't trust the military period. I know a married couple that are both physicians. They both used the army to get their education.
When all of this stuff started, since the wife specializes in trauma and surgery, she was one of the first called up and shipped over.
There is never a "never" in the military.
You belong to them. It is not beyond the realm of feasability that your friend's son could end up driving a supply truck in Iraq if that is where they needed for him to be.

5. Is your HS counselor helping at all?
I know some are worthless, but if you can find a good one, they're extremely helpful.

6. The problem we have at our school
for all of the local scholarships is that the person who is valedictorian edges these kids out of all of the ones they could generally get.
She already has a full ride PLUS give or take $20k in local money and is still applying for more.
It has become a contest to her to get everything she can--even though she doesn't need it and won't use it. She just wants to hear them all announced at graduation.:eyes:
She is edging the other kids out of everything. They don't stand a chance when she applies.

13. Does she have a prticular area of academic interest?
That would narrow down the search.

15. If you do a Google search for "pharmacology scholarships"...
... you'll find tons of links for possible scholarships. There were too many for me to post here right now.

7. We were at the movies last night. The theater is in our local mall.
Right in front of the theater entrance, on a HUGE wall, is a HUGE military mural!:grr: It covers the entire wall and is hard to miss. Hanging on the wall is a rack of military branch brochures that tell the kids how wonderful the military is. I was sitting there contemplating on how I could get away with throwing those brochures in the nearby garbage can and ripping the damn mural off the wall. Of course the mural is a group of happy, smiling military kids.......not Walter Reed patients missing their arms and legs.:grr:

8. I, too, have a graduating daughter.
We are using fastweb. She will get a Hope Scholarship which is given to students with a 3.25 average. This scholarship is funded with lottery money and they give each qualified student in the state of Tennessee $3250 each year they keep up their grades. I love that use of lottery money!

BTW, I am in emotional shambles with her leaving. How are you doing?

9. That is fabulous!
I agree...I am not really sure what they use Texas Lottery money for, only that it is not used for the actual initial intended purpose. Go figure...
I'll miss her...but I think it is exciting to see one of your children go out in the world.
Besides, she won't be far away.;)

10. I lived in the DFW area when the lottery debate was taking place.
They said the money would go toward education. We still have good friends and family there and they tell us that they don't think that $$ is going to education...although they don't have any idea where it is going. Maybe into Tom Delay's re-election fund or maybe even his bail!?!

Good luck to your daughter as she heads out into the world!

12. Fastweb probably has the military as sponsors, they probably get
money to help run their site, in return the Army/Navy get to bombard you with recruitment messages when you log on.

Scholarship sites would be a natural for the military to target for recruitment. Young people who need money.
