Rockin' time at the anti-war march in Chicago last night
There were no floats, which disappointed us, but the marching band and the peace colorguard were fabulous. We had a great time, depressing as the occasion is. If you went and you heard 3 people trying to start up a chant of "George Bush, you lousy pimp, you lying, cheating, killing chimp," that was me, Liza, and our friend Jay. (It didn't catch on for some reason.)

HEAVY police presence! Really quite a bit of overkill. Complete with billy clubs, riot shields, and hockey-style shin guards. But no actual incidents that we saw.

Anyone else turn out? Did anyone see these much-talked-of "floats"?

C ya,

2. Use it at your next rally
More of an effort needs to be made in coming up with new chants. Everyone just keeps reusing the same 3 or 4 chestnuts. Liza and I have memorized most of the lyrics to the Cheney version of the Folsom Prison Blues (the one they had on HuffingtonPost for a while) so we sang that to keep ourselves entertained. We need more situation-specific songs that are simple enough for people to sing.

I came up with one a long time ago based on "99 bottles of beer":

99 reasons for going to war
99 reasons to go--
Shoot one down, kick it around,
98 reasons for going to war.

Saddam Hussein had a whole mess of nukes,
Saddam had a whole mess of nukes;
Shoot that down--no weapons found
97 reasons for going to war.

We will be welcomed as liberators,
Welcomes with flowers and cards;
Shoot that down--car bombs abound
96 reasons for going to war

and so on.

Ah well. We will unfortunately have years to refine our protest technique.

3. My post from a different thread...

...on V for Vendetta:

Saw it last night with my nephew on an IMAX screen here in Chicago. The delicious irony, though, was when we were walking to the subway to head back home (around 7pm), we saw all the jack-booted, riot-geared Chicago Police Sturmpolizei lingering in groups after the antiwar rally. When life imitates (and in this case inspires, of course) art...
