Democrats and God: Like Mixing Oil & Water
At least according to the writer of this LTTE to the Portsmouth (OH) Daily Times

http://www.portsmouth-dailytimes.com/news/letters_to_the_editor/

Many Democrats don't mix with God

Saturday, March 18, 2006 11:00 PM EST

It amazes me the number of people who use the word Democrat with God and prayer. It's like mixing oil and water. I think many Democratic candidates in office or running for office support homosexual rights and abortion. Those are two things the Bible specifically refers to as sin. Do you think the doctor says a prayer just before he kills the baby? On judgment day when someone stands before God would you say, “Yes I know the Democrats are in favor of those things, but they give us a better chance of getting jobs.” Would you expect a positive response? God's word says seek ye first the kingdom of God and all things will be added unto you.

There are many scriptures that tell us to put our trust in God not man. We have to believe that if it is not of God then it is of the devil. You cannot serve two masters. I am not saying this as a Republican, but as a Christian. Our trust and dependency must be in God and his word, not in man. Lay not your treasures here on earth, but lay for yourselves treasures in heaven, for there will your heart be also.

XXXXXXXX

Minford

******

But of course, never mind the children we are blowing to bits in Iraq, or the ones right here in our own country who have neither adequate shelter nor food nor health care. Never mind the poor in our own country who must choose between a meal and medicine. Never mind a leader who is a compulsive liar and warmonger. Never mind the destruction of the environment and the global warming crisis. Oh yes, never mind all those sins.

It's ABORTION and GAYS, I tell you.

ABORTION AND GAYS!

ABORTION AND GAYS!

AND YOU DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO HELL!

:sarcasm:

16. Actually, the folks who SHOULD be reponding to these type of LTTEs....
... are progressive Christians and pastors. As a non-religious gay person who no longer lives in the area, any rebuttal from me wouldn't have nearly the impact of a well-reasoned letter from a Democrat & Christian who is a local.

3. Bullshit
Is the Republicans' trust and dependency in God and his word? Nope, they put their trust and dependency in some dumb asshole named Bush. To the tune of a trillion of dollars and tens of thousands of innocent lives. Goddamned brainless idiots.

5. Yeah, okay.
"Democrats ... give us a better chance of getting jobs.”

"God's word says seek ye first the kingdom of God and all things will be added unto you."

Wonder how many out-of-work Republican voters are still waiting for God to step in and 'add unto them' before they wind up homeless?

6. I am tired of the republicans claiming they to be the party for Christians
The Neo-Cons hijacked religion and it is high time the true Christians take it back from the hypocrites.

Outside of this person claiming to be Christian, there is no evidence that this person has a Christian bone in their body.
We have DINOs and RINOs I guess there are CINO's (Christian In Name Only) as well.

8. You got it right. More than tiresome, and they avoid these.
Yep. Abortion and gays (maybe affirmative action, too!). These right wing nuts who corrupt religion never recall these. Ever. These are inconvenient to them, to say the least:

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they shall possess the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice,
for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

9. Yes, of course...
Democracy by superstition.

My apologies to all sincere liberal Christians, but that's what it seems like to me.

I'm SO tired of hearing this superstitious claptrap played off as intelligent debate. The bible doesn't address abortion, but, I may add, DOES report God requiring the mass murder of men, women, AND children (born and unborn) whenever it suited his purposes.

The God of the Old Testament was an out and out sadistic bastard.

I can just picture them sending all the gays and non-Christians off to camps (work shall set you free!) and their children off to Hitler Youth Camps. Abortion would be outlawed (just as it was in Nazi Germany) and they would gladly proclaim God's approval as they sent their armies off in pre-emptive strikes against their neighbors.

Further, their children would be encouraged to report "unpatriotic" teachers and professors, anyone disagreeing with the government would be refused the right to travel, "subversive" books would be banned or burned, newspapers and radio would be censored or used as propaganda tools, and artists would have their work condemned as "degenerate".

They would view their strongman leader/dictator as a "man of God" and their place in the world as exalted and superior, with their divine destiny to conquer and subjugate "inferior" cultures and peoples.

Sound familar?

Oh, and they had a one-party system, too.

24. "I think many..
..Democratic candidates in office or running for office support homosexual rights and abortion", he writes.

Guess what? I'm sure many Republican candidates in office or running for office support homosexual rights and abortion. It just depends on your definition of the word "many". Are Republicans also hell-bound?

25. Well, I've penned a response
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 09:00 PM by theHandpuppet
I'll submit it tomorrow and we'll see if it finds its way into print. Here tis:

In response to the recent letter writer from Minford who suggested, "Many Democrats Don't Mix With God" ( Saturday, March 18, 2006) I humbly offer a proposal:

Perhaps we could follow the example of another country which decided that gays, reproductive choice, and a multi-party system are the antithesis to God's teachings.

Like this historical example, we could send all gays and non-Christians off to camps (work shall set you free!) and their children off for special schooling, where they can be segregated from any contact with possibly insidious influences and thoughts of people not like ourselves. Further, reproductive choice would be outlawed and we could gladly proclaim God's approval as we sent our armies off in pre-emptive strikes against our neighbors.

In addition, we should encourage our children to report unpatriotic teachers and professors. Certainly we can all concur that anyone disagreeing with the government should be refused the right to travel, "subversive" books should be banned or burned, newspapers and radio should be censored as to discourage dissent, and modern artists should have their work condemned as "degenerate".

We should most assuredly view our leader as an infallible "man of God" and our place in the world as exalted and superior, with our divine destiny to conquer and subjugate inferior and heretical cultures and peoples. Dissent with the ruling party and leader should be immediately condemned as unpatriotic if not outlawed.

Sound familar?

Perhaps some of you are also familiar with this quote: "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it" -- George Santayana

26. When in history has a theocracy
actually been Godly.

Most of the atrocities done in the name of God - happen when people (like this writier) have the audacity to believe that they speak and act for God - and that as such anything they think - regardless how evil - must be attributable to God and thus is must be sanctioned even when the action is far out of accordance with the teachings from that God.
