The SF Bay article is filled with inaccuracies, innuendo, oversights, fabrications, and twistings of information. It's an editorial, is all it is, with informative content next to none.
They talk about "radiation," "nuclear wars," etcetera, but fail to convey even the most basic information about ultra-short-range alpha particles, which is all that's produced by depleted uranium. Alpha particles bear almost no resemblence to the gamma rays that are traditionally thought of as "radiation." It's scare tactics, promigulated by somebody with a specific agenda. More to the point, they fail even to mention that the alpha radiation from depleted uranium is only dangerous if particulates are inhaled--in which case you have a much bigger problem than radiation, since uranium is a heavy metal, and therefore highly toxic. By the time you got a large enough dose to cause health problems from radiation, you'd probably be dead from chemical poisoning. That's the real danger of depleted uranium, but the anti-DU crusaders are more interested in using it to push an obsessive anti-nuclear agenda, and to accuse the US of deliberate genocide, rather than actually dealing with the problem.
They say that vaccines don't cause cancer, but they fail to mention that the vaccines given to U.S. troops in the Gulf were both experimental and loaded with preservatives which are now known to cause autism in children, immunodeficiency issues, and a host of other problems.
They say that US troops were only exposed to vaccines and depleted uranium, which is not true. They conveniently ignore the destruction of chemical weapons depots, the toxic fallout from oil well fires, pesticides applied to US uniforms, and any other potential toxin sources.
They focus on the Gulf War, but make brief mention of Yugoslavia and Kosovo, claiming that this supports their case. The reality is that there's no real data pointing to any significant uptick in cancer or anything else from this area.
In the end, much of the rhetoric on depleted uranium boils down to a handful of ultra-doves who really just want to cry imperialism and claim that the US has deliberately set out to commit genocide for oil, and that all recent presidents have been equally guilty. It's a load of crap. I would have thought that there were enough real wrongs committed during the recent national malfeasence that people wouldn't have to make up new ones, but apparently I was wrong. There are always those who would prefer wail and gnash their teeth, blaming all Americans for everything, the good guys and the bad guys alike, rather than actually hold to account those who deserve it.
