I just bashed the MSM on local radio—Ask me anything!
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 11:09 AM by Reader Rabbit
Kink.fm here in Portland is doing an ongoing bit on yesterday's protest on their morning show. They're discussing why so few Americans seem motivated to do anything about the Iraq War and the Bush Administration. I got to talk to Les and Rebecca for quite a while, and they later played two clips of me!

1. Portland, Oregon, I presume
God's one blessed city in the US where the only political debate is whether George W Bush is merely incompetent or whether he is an alien put here to destroy the Earth!

3. Yeah! Any chance they will replay it?
If not, could you let us know what you said?

Way to go!
:yourock:
(I really wanted to go to the protest with you all yesterday, but had other plans.) x(

4. No clips, sorry
I'm not technologically savvy enough to manage such a thing. However, they just replayed one of my clips, so maybe they'll do so again before they go off the air at 9:00.

I've gotta say, Rebecca is awesome!

7. Yes I did. It looked like a great turnout!
What a great day for a protest! Did you read the story in the Oregonian? They had to downplay the turnout. They estimated 8000-9000 people. Hmmmm.

My cousin's little ones had a birthday party yesterday. Fun for all, but I wish I could have joined you!

Jen

8. No, but my back hurts!
The walking wasn't a problem, but the standing around had an effect. I know you don't like The Oregonian, but they had an awesome picture of the crowd on the front page today. I spotted a tiny speck of yellow on the left side of the photo which I think is us! Yay, us!

Thousands join Portland march
War in Iraq - Protesters for peace fan through downtown, hoping to inspire others to take up political activism
Monday, March 20, 2006
MARK LARABEE and ERIN HOOVER BARNETT
With a sea of protesters, signs and sunglasses spread out before him, the Rev. LeRoy Haynes Jr. took the stage Sunday at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and sermonized about what he called "the evil of the war in Iraq."

At one point during his fiery speech, the pastor of Allen Temple CME Church told the crowd they were at a pivotal point in the nation's history.

"We will not give up our democracy to Bush and Cheney," he said. "We say no to an administration who asks our sons and daughters to fight for democracy in a foreign nation while they steal it from us at home."

10. Just realized I should probably summarize my comments! D'oh!
Les and Rebecca were discussing the protest all morning and asking listeners why they thought so many Americans were apathetic or unwilling to get involved. I told them I thought one of the main reasons people didn't get involved is because they feel isolated. Because the MSM does not cover those opposing the war or the Bush administration with any consistency or regularity, people who disagree with what's going on feel as if they are the only ones out there. And nobody wants to stick their neck out if they're the only ones doing it!

I also mentioned the fact that perhaps people aren't active because they don't realize or understand the extent of what is happening, again as a result of under-coverage in the MSM. Clinton's scandals were covered because they were sexual in nature, and therefore simplistic. The Bush scandals are more complex and detailed, and in a sound-bite society, the MSM doesn't believe these issues will hold people's attention long enough to make it to the commercial, so they don't cover them.

At least, that's what I think I said. As I mentioned earlier, I was pretty excited!

13. Addendum
Just wanted to add that I thanked them about 100 times for covering the protest and discussing the issue. I thought it was very telling that, at one point, Rebecca joked that they would probably be fired for it later today.

The fact that she bothered to make a joke about it suggests that it is something that has come up. How many media people do you think feel the same way, even jokingly?

14. Some even say it out loud...
There was the guy who worked at Faux for awhile, and Kristina Borjesson was just on BOOKTV again this weekend. She says alot about the whole behind-the-scenes mindset.

The discussion thread got moved to the 911 forum because she stated her theories on 911. 90% of it was about the media though.

15. Could you imagine the listener backlash?
I think they are pretty safe discussing it with their audience demographic.

Us old hippies can always go back to classic rock if KINK management were to piss us off.
