The black death and ccr5-delta 32

Plagues are not all bad, and the Black Death (bubonic plague) that swept into Europe from Asia in 1346 was no exception.

It is now common knowledge that bacteria, insects, plants, and even humans can build up resistances to poisons, diseases, and antibiotics.

Mutations are always occurring; some good, some neutral, some bad. It has been found that a human mutation designated CCR5-delta 32 confers immunity to AIDS if inherited from both parents. People carrying the CCR5-delta 32 mutation lack the receptors to which the AIDS virus must attach itself if it is to infect the person.

What has all this to do with the Black Death?

"Although the origin of the mutation is obscure, it appears to have suddenly become relatively common among white Europeans about 700 years ago. That increase suggests that something must have occurred about that time to greatly favor the survival of people carrying the mutation."

What biological catastrophe decimated Europe 700 years ago? The Black Death. One-quarter to one-third of the Europeans succumbed between 1347 and 1350. The Black Death strongly modified the European gene pool, increasing the frequency of CCR5-delta 32. This mutation may not have had any direct effect on the plague itself. It may just be a quirk of fate that the survivors of the Black Death had a higher frequency of the CCR5-delta 32 mutation, and it is doubly quirky that the mutation confers a resistance to AIDS, which is a recent human affliction.

About 10% of whites of European origin now carry the CCR5-delta 32 mutation. The incidence is only 2% in central Asia. The mutation is completely absent among East Asians, Africans, and American Indians.

(Brown, David; "AIDS Resistance Might Be a Legacy of Plague Survival," Dallas Morning News, May 18, 1998. Cr. D. Phelps)

==============================================================================================

It is suspected that AIDS was purposefully introduced into China, who is now suffering a secret epidemic of AIDS that makes the African AIDS epidemic look like a few people who called in sick to work with a cold.

"....look like a few people who called in sick to work with a cold."

Well that comparison isn't completely reprehensible and disgusting or anything.

10. Doesn't mean it was "deliberately" introduced.
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 12:33 PM by Spider Jerusalem
Only takes a single case of, say, a businessman infected by a prostitute in Bangkok and going on to infect another prostitute in Shanghai to create a vector for major spread of AIDS within China (which is a much more believable theory than the idea that it was "deliberately" introduced for sinister reasons, which is, quite honestly, insane).

5. The idea that AIDS was "created" is totally at odds...
with the fact that the oldest known case dates to 1959, and estimates based on analysis of preserved blood and plasma samples from that first known case that HIV was introdced into the human population c. 1930 (+/- 15 years), with its probable origins being in consumption of the meat of monkeys infected with immunoviruses that jumped species and mutated.

13. curious
Yes, the plague DID decimate Europe, but the premordial site for endemic yersenia pestis is around present-day Mongolia, and then it traveled west in fairly regular epizootics that spread to humans. It still happens that way. I wonder if it's not something else that keeps the Asians free of the mutation--seems like they'd be the FIRST to develop it . . .

16. I'm wondering if AIDS is getting ready to burst out in the US
I saw some figures for Washington DC that didn't look good, 1 in 20 adults carrying the HIV virus? If that's true, that's got to be close to some kind of tipping point. We tend to think of AIDS as confined to needle users and the gay community, but there is some crossover and once that tipping point is reached.....

Has anyone else seen any recent data? What about data on syphilis or gonorrhea, since these are often marker diseases?

17. marker diseases?
you mean AIDs could be as prevalent as gonorrhea? 1/20 sounds ludicrous. I doubt it seriously... I think the stats on gonorrhea are quite high-- but its curable whereas HIV is not.....

19. When syphilis and gonorrhea are spreading it usually means that HIV is too
The difference is that HIV is asymptomatic so people don't show up for treatment.

21. People tend to catch all three diseases the same way.
The difference is that HIV is asymptomatic so people don't show up for treatment. That's why syphilis and gonorrhea rates are used to track "safe sex" practice rates and estimate HIV exposure and transmission.

I heard or saw the 1 in 20 number some place recently but I can't remember where. I agree, it's a very high number which is why I'm wondering if I misheard it. It was definitely HIV I heard about which is what really made it scary. Straight white people in the US tend to think of HIV and AIDs as someone else's problem: gays, needle users, Africans etc. It's been a smoldering problem in the black community which again makes it easy for the straight white community to ignore. If HIV infection rates reach a tipping point though, they will tip into the general (ie straight white) population. By then it'll be too late to wish that more effort had been put into prevention programs.

25. First and foremost, you can't be infected with AIDS.
Whenever a discussion appears on DU about HIV/AIDS many people here have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. A person can only be infected with HIV, a virus, which can lead to an AIDS diagnosis (on average, 10 years if untreated). Our immune system responds in two ways when faced with an invader/something that is non-self: innate immunity or adaptive/acquired immunity. What we know now is that the HIV virus attacks the adaptive/acquired immune response, specifically our CD4/T-cells.

Now, to address the "conspiracy theory" proposed by the OP. As was mentioned before by another poster, the earliest case of HIV confirmed was found in blood samples of an African man who died in 1959. CD4/T-cells were not discovered and named until 1981. In order for a government to knowingly create a virus that specifically attacks cells that haven't even been discovered yet is impossible.

What's really fascinating about the article that you posted is that there are persons who can't be infected with HIV because their ancestors had been infected with the Black Plague. Their ancestors have passed on a generic mutation that makes these individuals very important in the race to find a vaccination or even a cure for HIV.

I didn't mean AIDS was created to wipe out non-whites.
I meant it was being used to do it.

CIA introducing infected blood, infected needles, etc. into China. That is the :tinfoilhat: part.

from the rules:
Do not quote or link to "conspiracy theory" websites, except in our September 11 forum, which is the only forum on Democratic Underground where we permit members to debate highly speculative conspiracy theories. A reasonable person should be able to identify a conspiracy theory website without much difficulty.
