WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon said 51 people are under arrest after crossing a fence near the grounds of the Defense Department headquarters. Marchers protesting the Iraq war tried to deliver a mock coffin to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
The arrests followed a generally low key anti-war protest. About 200 people marched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Pentagon, calling for the U.S. to leave Iraq. Pentagon police officers stood behind a temporary barrier of 5-foot-high steel fencing, set up on the edge of a parking lot just east of the Pentagon grounds. Those who crossed it were given citations for failure to obey lawful orders. It's a misdemeanor, but requires a mandatory appearance in federal court.
Among the protesters -- but not the fence climbers -- was Cindy Sheehan, who last summer staged a month-long protest outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch. She said the group today represents "millions of people around the world."
About 100 war protesters gathered outside the building where Bush gave a speech Monday about progress in Iraq, banging drums, holding peace signs and chanting for him to leave.
