Nobody has seen a boat of any kind on Mt. Ararat! What these Christian fundamentalists have is a fairly clear satellite photo of some sort of rock or ice ledge. If you superimpose a shape of long boat or ship on this 'anomoly' you have something that would be roughly the right size for the biblical description on Noah's Ark! This is not a picture of a ship, vessel, or structure of any type. Photo analysts have reviewed the picture some call it a rock outcropping, some call it an ice flow,and some call it inconclusive. Can't they put this to rest!

This link seems to contradict the ABC article as to the size of the Ark. It notes that it's about 450ft x 75ft x 45ft for a total of about 1.5 million cubic feet. So let's go with an insanely conservative estimate and say that there were 1.5 million species of animals on the earth, that would mean 3 million animals on board, each having their own half cubic foot cargo space. I'd imagine it would quickly become very difficult to breathe once you manage to shrink down to your allocated space. I'm guessing they didn't allow carry ons.

and if you're a believer, misses the point of the story. Of course the Hebrew Scriptures and other cultures all have flood stories. The important point isn't the Ark but the interplay between God and Noah. For example, at the end, God promises never again to drown all of mankind. That's kind of comforting given the state of the weather these days! (By the way, Noah isn't really a very good guy. He follows God's orders without a single argument and lets everyone else drown. Abraham on the other hand, bargained for the lives of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.)

On a more rational basis, I go with recent studies tying the story of the flood to the collapse of an ice dam in the Mediterranean Sea (?) that allowed a huge flow of water into the Black Sea flooding out early agricultural settlements at the end of the last Ice Age. Apparently the flow of water through the Bosporus still echoes this event and the archeology is fascinating.

Whoever the woman on CNN was all she could ask about was whether they had complaints from creationist OR Intelligent Design followers (see they are different).

It was horrible. All this guy (clearly not a press person) was asked about was how this DIDN'T mention creationism ("No disclaimers?") and if anyone had become upset that ID wasn't beign presented.

To his credit he very calmly mentioned that ID has no basis in science and that the scientific community has no issues with evolution.

Supposedly the red outline delineates the measurements for the ark found in the bible. Alright.

However the "boat shape" (outlined here in blue and green) is maybe half as long and 2/3 as wide.
It's an outcropping of a geologic ridge (green line) from recent activity - these mountains are relatively young, so they have lots of crisp lines. It is in fact a ledge that casts a shadow (yellow line) across the floor of a small dip. The ridge itself slopes towards the northwest, and is capped by a snow pack.

If this is an ark, the Chugach mountains are full of arks. I'll have to break out my camera and sell fundies evidence that Noah landed in Alaska, looks like.

Many, many religions have deluge stories in their scriptures. (The Noah's ark story appears in the Koran, for example.) They tend to differ in the details, though, specifying other landing sites for the ark. Are we going to search out all those other arks as well?

Zeus sent a flood to destroy the men of the Bronze Age. Prometheus advised his son Deucalion to build a chest. All other men perished except for a few who escaped to high mountains. The mountains in Thessaly were parted, and all the world beyond the Isthmus and Peloponnese was overwhelmed. Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha (daughter of Epimetheus and Pandora), after floating in the chest for nine days and nights, landed on Parnassus. When the rains ceased, he sacrificed to Zeus, the God of Escape. At the bidding of Zeus, he threw stones over his head; they became men, and the stones which Pyrrha threw became women. That is why people are called laoi, from laas, "a stone."

An older version of the story told by Hellanicus has Deucalion's ark landing on Mount Othrys in Thessaly. Another account has him landing on a peak, probably Phouka, in Argolis, later called Nemea.

From his heavenly window, the supreme god Pramzimas saw nothing but war and injustice among mankind. He sent two giants, Wandu and Wejas (water and wind), to destroy earth. After twenty days and nights, little was left. Pramzimas looked to see the progress. He happened to be eating nuts at the time, and he threw down the shells. One happened to land on the peak of the tallest mountain, where some people and animals had sought refuge. Everybody climbed in and survived the flood floating in the nutshell. God's wrath abated, he ordered the wind and water to abate. The people dispersed, except for one elderly couple who stayed where they landed. To comfort them, God sent the rainbow and advised them to jump over the bones of the earth nine times. They did so, and up sprang nine other couples, from which the nine Lithuanian tribes descended.

The gods had decided to destroy mankind. The god Enlil warned the priest-king Ziusudra ("Long of Life") of the coming flood by speaking to a wall while Ziusudra listened at the side. He was instructed to build a great ship and carry beasts and birds upon it. Violent winds came, and a flood of rain covered the earth for seven days and nights. Then Ziusudra opened a window in the large boat, allowing sunlight to enter, and he prostrated himself before the sun-god Utu. After landing, he sacrificed a sheep and an ox and bowed before Anu and Enlil. For protecting the animals and the seed of mankind, he was granted eternal life and taken to the country of Dilmun, where the sun rises.

Chaldean

The god Chronos in a vision warned Xisuthrus, the tenth king of Babylon, of a flood coming on the fifteenth day of the month of Daesius. The god ordered him to write a history and bury it in Sippara, and told him to build and provision a vessel (5 stadia by 2 stadia) for himself, his friends and relations, and all kinds of animals. Xisuthrus asked where he should sail, and Chronos answered, "to the gods, but first pray for all good things to men." Xisuthrus built a ship five furlongs by two furlongs and loaded it as ordered. After the flood had come and abated somewhat, he sent out some birds, which returned. Later, he tried again, and the birds returned with mud on their feet. On the third trial, the birds didn't return. He saw that land had appeared above the waters, so he parted some seams of his ship, saw the shore, and drove his ship aground in the Corcyraean mountains in Armenia. He disembarked with his wife, daughter, and pilot, and offered sacrifices to the gods. Those four were translated to live with the gods. The others at first were grieved when they could not find the four, but they heard Xisuthrus' voice in the air telling them to be pious and to seek his writings at Sippara. Part of the ship remains to this day, and some people make charms from its bitumen.
