Grrrr! First it was Bush speaking on immigration saying that illegal immigrants are doing the work American's don't WANT to do, and now he's changed the rhetoric to "the jobs American's WON'T do!" That's bullshit!

I know of thousands, millions of hard-working Americans who would do ANYTHING right now to get a scrap on the table or pay their heating bills!

They are supposed to be paid the equivalent of what an American worker is paid, but companies downgrade the job titles and drastically reduce the salaries so that they can save huge bucks.

My husband works at a company where dozens of American tech workers have been laid off and replaced by cheap labor H1-B workers, mostly from India.

I'm not sure if these H1-B workers get health coverage, so that may be another way that my husband's employer, and other companies, save money and screw Americans by hiring H1-Bs.

I keep hearing about this H1-B issue lately and can't remember having heard about it so much in the past so I must admit I really know next to nothing about it. Do you know how much their hourly wage or yearly salary is?

The law says the H-1B worker is supposed to get paid the same as the US worker.

I worked for NPCA* (Non-profit company "A") as an employee. We were working on a conversion project, consolidating like info from several different branches into one computer system. It was a big job. The employees were sent to training to learn the way the new system worked.

The project was led by a consultant who also was partner in HSC* (H-1B Staffing Company). HSC* hired the H-1B employees and provided them as contract workers to different projects. The project leader determined how many people she needed and was able to provide them to NPCA* for $100 an hour. HSC* paid the workers $50 an hour but there was no vacation leave and no sick leave and no benefits. This means HSC* earned $50 an hour for each H-1B person they were able to place.
The project went on for over a year and the project leader determined that she needed about 50 HSC* workers. That was a gross profit of about $900 a week per HSC* worker unless there was overtime allotted.

This arrangement worked out well for HSC*.

I worked for an American owned contracting/consulting company. We had a contract with a government entity. After 9/11 I thought this government entity would require all of us to get security clearances, but instead, when our contract was up, they went with an H-1B company that under-bid us.
The H-1b company was owned by a man from Iran. I do not know his current citizenship. He did hire a few Americans, but most of his staff was from India, maybe 2 or 3 were from China. All were under 35 years old and only 1% were women.
In order to underbid the American company, he understaffed and required his people to work most weekends. The rumor was that he paid the prevailing wage, but without benefits. These are conditions that most American Professionals would resist, but as Bush said, the foreign workers take the jobs Americans don't want to do.
I really wanted to do that work, just not under those conditions.

From my viewpoint, H-1B rules help the employers circumvent the anti-discrimination laws against race, age and gender.

The rules say that the workers are to be paid the same as American workers, but if the company does not have American workers, how do they determine what "same" is.

Sad to see these things going on here in America. Looks like we need an OVERHAUL of the labor laws. Of course no Republican would DARE force companies to comply with the laws that are on the books and provide employees with benefits and livable wages, etc, OH NO, THAT would be bad for business.

at my husband's company in Washington, DC.

But he's heard they get about 1/3 less.

Since they're consultants, the company doesn't have to pay them any benefits. I don't know what, if any, benefits are provided to them by their consulting companies. I DO know that at least some of them live cheaply in dormitories provided by the consulting companies.

I am in the Virginia suburbs of DC. I just looked up the code for renting out rooms in a home and found that, unless you have a special permit, you may only have two renters in a residential area.

Two of the H-1B consultants working at a non-profit company where I was working
went together to buy a townhouse. (See my post above) One of them was working with me and took our group to see his new acquisition. We noticed that he and the other owner were sleeping on sleeping bags in the upstairs bedrooms and there were several sleeping bags in the basement for their "renters."
It looked like they were illegally running a dorm in their basement.

As long as they are consultants, and not employees, they do NOT qualify for the same benefits. The consulting company that employs them would be the source of their benefits.

This all started because of Y2K. I believe the crisis was hyped to get a higher quota. Now the fake crisis is over, the quota can be lowered so that we American workers can get back to work. It is tough being over 50 and trying to compete for jobs against these young H-1B workers. They have so many greedy backers pushing for them. I only have me.

If an H-1B woman was able to get a job as an employee rather than a contractor, she quickly became pregnant. We won bets on it. So, I don't think the H-1B contractors had insurance. There weren't very many woman, and none of them were pregnant.

The list goes on and on, and the problem is not immigrant labor as farm workers. The problem is that millions of illegal workers are destroying the livelihoods of blue collar workers in this country, by driving wages down and flooding their job market with cheap labor.
