Please help me on that because in my mind, I didn't like the picture that his words painted.

there was the Taint. Oh not the common sort of "two in the pink one in the stink" type of taint, but rather a metaphysically suspect variety of taint. The darksided taint of not clearly being godly in status, of not being genitively and ablatively of by and for God. Taint is a question mark; whatever is under the shadow of Evil is tainted, and everything not clearly shining in the light of the Good is to some degree enshadowed, suspect, tainted.
