Before lots of people on the left jump on the impeachment bandwagon, I just want to note that I don't think it's the right thing.

George Bush was elected president of the United States at least once. I think he has been particularly bad at it the last few years. He has some time left to straighten things out.

Bush will or won't solve his problems and then he and the whole pack of dubious players who came in with him will be gone.

But, elected by the people, Bush should sit in that chair until the final day of his term.

This is a democracy, not a business. You can push an unpopular chief executive officer out the window anytime you want. You can't do that with a president because the office is much bigger than the man who sits in it.

If stupidity were a high crime or a misdemeanor, we would all be in prison.

Criticism is one thing that should always be welcome.

But we can't impeach a president just because people don't like the job he is doing.

not an editorial by the Chicago Tribune.

Edit: And he appears to be something of an idiot. You don't let a president commit crimes on the scale Bush has.

His premise that impeachment is discussed merely because people "don't like" Bush is a particularly dire brand of willful idiocy.

Hell, except for Molly Ivins (once a week), Leonard Pitts, Jr (once a week) and Stephen Chapman, it's practically unreadable most of the time. They also carry whiny right winger Katherine Parker, so that tells you something.

Apparently, it didn't occur to Charles Madigan that Presidents can be impeached for lying/breaking the law. Which, correct me if I'm wrong, this President has already done.

And some people certainly didn't observe this kind of thinking with Bill Clinton, now did they?

Dear Sirs:

My list of problems, and explanations of those problems, with Mr. Madigan's article decrying the possibility of George Bush's impeachment would extend far beyond the length allowed in this forum, so I will be brief.

Regarding Mr. Madigan's statement that Bush "has been particularly bad at (being President) the last few years": Does that not pretty much encompass his entire stolen term in office, sir? At what point has Mr. Bush's presidency been considered a success by any but the wealthy beneficiaries of his spendthrift fiscal "policies" (i.e. tax cuts, and more tax cuts)?

Regarding his glib assertion that "The war is not going well because they only go well when they end.": This is patently absurd. Prior to American/Union victories in the wars that we won prior to the National Security Act of 1947 (Civil War, WWI, WWII), things were going very well, thus the ultimate victory. Had things been going badly prior to the end of those wars, and others, it is unlikely the enemy of the hour would have capitulated.

The questions about the accuracy of "elected by the people, Bush should sit in that chair until the final day of his term" are apparent, and needn't be belabored.

I could go on much longer, point by point, but I will close with my response to Mr. Madigan's contention that "This is a democracy, not a business." First, as the dubious election results (esp. from Ohio) in 2004 and Supreme Court stoppage of the Florida recount in 2000 indicate, calling the US a democracy is something of a stretch. Also, remember it was Bush who campaigned on his ability to run our government like a business. If that is the case, and he is the "unpopular chief executive" in question and we are the shareholders, which we are, it is time for him to go out the window.

20. This Is Beyond Impechment, It's Criminal...Impeachment Is Political

People feel as though impeachment would be some do-all end-all to the Repugnican party or somehow reverse the 2000 and 2004 elections and turn the clock back. Sorry, not gonna happen and isn't what really is what we're facing here.

I need not go into the impossibilities of even getting impeachment resolutions introduced into the Judiciary Committee yet alone a vote on the House and Senate floors. That's where only super sold Democratic majorities could make it happen...and even if there was a massive Democratic landslide this November, by the time investigations and articles were introduced, the 2008 election is starting to kick into gear.

Repugnicans love the impeachment game as it plays into the "boooosh hate" meme that is one of the very few they can use to rally the dwindling Repugnican base...and an overall concept that a majority of Americans really don't favor. No one wants to relive the circus that surrounded the Clinton inquisition (and it backfired on the Repugnicans)...a boooosh impeachment would create a similar backlash that would turn political and personal and away from the criminality involved.

Sadly, the crimes of this regime also won't end the day they are ejected from the White House. The many criminal acts they've pulled upon the world and American people will take years to play out. It's the private civil and criminal suits and international tribunals that will should and will ultimately determine this cabal's place in history.
