89-year-old woman blacklisted by McCarthy to be honored

Eleanor Hadley's life was lifted from the pages of trailblazing history.

During and after World War II, the economist worked in nearly all-male settings, first for the State Department and then for the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur in occupied Japan.

For 17 years, starting at the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s, the U.S. government blacklisted her.

In the late 1980s, the emperor of Japan honored her.

The Seattle native taught economics, wrote a seminal book about Japanese business and, with her name finally cleared, returned to high-level government work.

Tonight, the 89-year-old will receive the Japan-America Society's highest honor at its annual meeting in Seattle. The non-profit organization, which promotes cultural and economic ties between the people of Japan and Washington, will give its new Thomas S. Foley Award to Hadley and three others

4. "extremely liberal political and economic views"
Imagine! Someone being blackballed for that! :eyes:

Thank God that woman is being honored after all the garbage that military shithead put her through. I'd actually love to find her book about the zaibatsu.

5. I'd like to find her book too.
As you know, I'm running a little low on books. ;)

Seriously, I'm sure her book would be fascinating. I bet we can track a copy down.

6. I'm interested in the structure of the zaibatsu.
For no reason other than I'm a dork. :)
