I Think We're Going To Whomp The Repukes In November

I know a thread with a title like this is catnip for those who are convinced that the pukes will steal it (and I know whomp's not a word), but if current trends continue, I'm convinced dems will do extremely well in November. It's not just the increasing distrust of repubs and bush, or the fatigue of a long, losing war and the shifting rationales for invasion, or the much touted but underperforming economy, it's that Americans don't like having all branches of government controlled by one party. The pendulum always swings in politics. Furthermore, dems are energized and not sure the same can be said for repubs. I don't think that the repubs can steal an election that's a mandate for change, and that's what I think we have coming up.

My biggest concern is the inevitable October surprise, but even that's going to be looked at with a jaundiced eye.

However, people said the same thing about 2004. Also keep in mind that many moderates may not like the republicans, but they also may not like the Democratic nominee (like in Ohio, with Hackett and Brown, who I hate.)

There is growing unrest among Republicans (and here, I'm referring mostly to Jane and John Everyperson), as well as an increasing number of Democrats (though lots of us have had the Cabal's number from the start). The country was pretty much 50/50 in 2000 and 2004; thus stealing elections was easier. I don't think it will be so easy this time.

Do I think the Cabal will try whatever they can to stay in office? Yep, I do. I don't put anything past them. But as you said, cali, this election is about a mandate for change, because people are not liking what's going on, and I think by November the demand for change will be even stronger than it is now. No one party should have control of all branches of government, be it the Republicans, the Democrats, or any other party. We know what happens when only one party has power -- checks and balances go out the window, which is not good for this country nor for her people.

7. I'm afraid I'm less optimistic

My understanding is that while Americans are increasingly disatisfied with the Republicans, and with Bush in particular, the Democrats are still failing to capitalise on this.

The fact that it's Senate and Congress, rather than presidential, may also mean that people are less inclined to make it a referendum on Iraq, and hence Bush, and vote on local issues instead, where they may be less dissatisfied with the Republicans.

I expect to see Democratic gains, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if they regain either house, and delighted but amazed if they take both.

8. I didn't mean to sound like

I thought that dems would capture the house or senate. In a day and age where most congressional seats are safe, I don't think that's realistic. I expect we'll gain 10 to 12 seats in the house and 3 in the Senate. To me that would be a resounding victory. I guess my expectations aren't that high if I see that as a whomping.

largely owned by corporate interests. Sometimes those interests back repubs, sometimes they back dems. Some of the most prestigious and widely read newspapers consistently back dems. The broadcast media is another story, but don't forget the increasing number of people who get their news from the net. Of late, the media has been pretty antagonistic to bush and co.
