RICE hits sour note: major Liverpool orchestra may boycott her visit!

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice could face the embarrassment of a top orchestra refusing to play for her on a UK trip. She is visiting Liverpool at the end of the month to help celebrate the city's status as European culture capital 2008.

But the US party could face a massive anti-war demonstration, angry trade union leaders have told the Mirror. Members of the Royal Liverpool Philarmonic are being asked to boycott the event in protest at US policies in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.

Alec McFadden, president of Merseyside TUCs, said: "The orchestra are all members of the Musicians Union and we have asked them not to perform.

"We have just marked the third anniversary of the start of the invasion of Iraq and there is strong opposition to this visit." Some music lovers have already cancelled membership of the supporting association in protest.
