Roses for Helen! Donate Today!
Most of you are aware of our movement to have a repeat performance of honoring a hero by showering them with roses like we did for Barbara Boxer. This time, we want to do that for Helen Thomas, the only reporter that I've ever heard bring up PNAC in the corporate media.

For more info, go here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=726885&mesg_id=726885

You can donate now here:

http://www.starcampaign.com/donate.htm

Our delivery date is April 14th!

Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to thank Helen for persisting in pursuing the truth. How difficult that must have been, particularly as she was moved to the back of the room, ignored, then excoriated in an attempt to break her spirit and get her to stop asking the tough questions. When she's in the room questioning, I always feel she carries the people's voice.
I only wish I could give more.

42. I think we need a plan

I think it is a wonderful way to let our heroes know that we respect them.

But, how many flowers would it take to really make an impression?

$100, $250, $300????

Also, when I donated, it was for HELEN.

I'm OK with spreading it around to Feingold, Conyers etc. but we need a plan.

For example...

Each week/month we could select a hero to get the DU ROSES, the 1st group of folks that donates and reaches the "impressive level of Roses $$ amount" gets to have them sent in their names.

Just a thought!

we can just keep a reserve to send whomever speaks out.I am all for positive reinforcement.Helen totally deserves this, and so do feingold,Lou Dobbs,Jack cafferty,Keith Olberman. These guys have been instrumental in bringing our issues to the forefront-and in the case of Dobbs and Cafferty,of bringing moderate republicans over to the dem side-which will be critical in 2006.

40. UPDATE - We have enough to send Helen 288 roses!
Hi all - I realized while picking up my son at school that I shouldn't mix this fundraiser with anyone else for a couple reasons - one, it states that this money is going towards roses for Helen and that would be fraudulant for me to split it up to others, and two, I want this to be all about her. I think we should concentrate any other fund raising for Russ Feingold and/or John Conyers and/or Al Gore to go directly into their PACs - we could choose a hero a month or a week to just donate to them directly. What do you guys think?

Syd, I'm guessing that he'd rather feel all the love through high ratings, good word of mouth, and the credibility that his honesty keeps piling up, rather than a flood of flowers. My two cents, especially since he's so very deserving.

But still: props to making sure he feels the love!

Changing things in mid stream is deceptive. Another day or another donation plan for the others. Helen gets roses for what this thread has generated.

The alternative, potiential recipients should of been thought of in the beginning.

That is my take on the issue.

59. done, I LOVE the "montly roses club" idea.
We could do a poll each month on who gets that months' roses. Here's a suggestion: Helen this month, troops in the hospital next month, Olberman the month after that...then Olberman can say "These roses are from Democratic Underground which picks worthy people who defend our rights. Last month they sent them to the soldiers in the hospital."

Or something like that. Press would be nice.

I saw on www.thankyoupatriot.com that Barbara Boxer ended up with 4500 roses. The organic florist is selling to us 144 roses (12 dozen) for $180 (including shipping). If my math is right, in order for us to send Helen 4500 roses, we would need to raise $5625.00 - do I have that right?

98. No, please, please.
You can have ENORMOUS impact without wasting money. There's a point of not just diminishing returns but where what's given becomes a real nuisance. Yeah, sure, they'll be sent to hospitals and such, but figure out some other wonderful way to use the excess money -- with consent from the donors, of course.

I would thank 12 doz. roses ought to be QUITE sufficient. Perhaps even less. 72 is a lovely number (6 doz) actually.

BUY A FREAKING AD with the rest. Or something a bit more useful than severe overkill on this idea.

73. UPDATE: We're $76 shy of being able to order 36 DOZEN roses!
We got Barbara Boxer 4500 roses - do we want the same goal? 36 dozen isn't close to 4500 roses (it's 432) but that is a LOT - what do we want our goal to be? Or should we just let this play out until April 13 ? I'm thinking the sooner we send the better - what say all y'all?

I don't think it's necessary to send her thousands, although that would certainly make a statement.

I think we need to do it now, instead of letting too much time pass. Helen is hot on the news circuit right now, this would likely get quite a bit of press just because everyone is paying attention to her now.

87. Have I mentioned how much I love y'all?? UPDATE
You are all so marvelous! We have enough now to buy her 36 DOZEN ROSES! 432 stems!

Some thoughts on some suggestions:

I will let this go for a few days so everyone who wants to donate has that opportunity - who doesn't love Helen?

On the color of the roses - the price quote I got was for assorted colors. I know some are suggesting white like the White Rose Society during that horrible time in Germany. 2 things on that - I think that may actually distract from the simple "Thank you" we are giving Helen and 2, white can also be a symbol of death - I would hate to send those. I think the more colorful and full of life the better. But these are my thoughts.

Thank you ALL!!!!

122. There is symbolism to the color of roses.
My own suggestion is that deep pink roses would say "thank you" and denote appreciation and admiration. One red rose among the deep pink roses could be suggestive of Helen, a respected woman of courage and an uncommon journalist in her profession.

http://www.rosaflora-flowers.com/meaning-of-roses.html

Red Roses
Red roses convey a simple message: "I love you". This makes them the ultimate symbol of romantic love and the most popular choice on Valentine's Day. Other meanings for red roses include desire, passion, courage, respect, beauty and sincerity. A red rosebud symbolizes purity and loveliness.

Coral Roses
Coral roses speak of desire and passion.

Lilac or Lavender Roses
Lilac roses reveal love at first sight or enchantment.

Orange Roses
Orange roses communicate desire, enthusiasm and fascination. They make an excellent choice for a new relationship that you wish to pursue further.

Peach Roses
Peach roses express gratitude, appreciation, admiration or sympathy. They can also convey sociability and friendship and send the message “Let's get together “. A pale peach rose symbolizes modesty.

Pink Roses
In general, pink roses symbolize grace, gentility and happiness and express appreciation and gratitude.

Pale Pink Roses
Pale pink roses connote grace, joy, gentility and gratitude.

Light Pink Roses
Light pink roses suggest happiness and fun. Like all pink roses, they also convey admiration and appreciation.

Deep Pink Roses
Deep pink roses say "Thank you". They also express appreciation, admiration, sincerity and sympathy.

White Roses
Second only to red roses in popularity, white roses symbolize truth and innocence. They also represent silence, secrecy, reverence, humility, youthfulness and charm. You can use them to say, "You're heavenly", "I miss you" and “I'm worthy of you”. A white rosebud symbolizes girlhood.

Yellow Roses
Yellow roses symbolize friendship and freedom, so are not specifically romantic roses. They convey congratulations, joy, gladness and delight. But they also promise a new beginning, say “Welcome back” and “Remember me”, and can convey jealousy and caring. Yellow roses with red tips symbolize friendship and falling in love.

147. Done. Please update the OP
Please update the original post with the cutoff day for donations. I almost gave up and went away, thinking I was too late because it said "donate today" from yesterday. Luckily, my need to procrastinate a little longer before getting back to work took over, and I scanned down through the msgs to see that it's still open.

Nice idea, BTW. Hopefully it will make at least a bit of a splash to bring some attention to Helen, and inspire more journalists to grow up and act like her!
