For those interested in a solid case for impeaching Bush & Cheney ...

.... you may want to read the references cited here:

Just want to be sure that everyone reads Richard Heinberg's detailed case. He concludes a thoroughly referenced study with:

Given all this, how will impeachment help? While it would be justified as a punishment for ineptitude or criminality, impeachment will not materially assist the nation to deal with Peak Oil unless current officials are replaced with ones who understand the problem and who are prepared to implement policies that radically shift America’s priorities in terms of energy, transportation, urban infrastructure, and agriculture. Looking out over the current political landscape in Washington, it is difficult to identify who those new officials might be. Nevertheless, it would help the nation to start now with a clean slate, and with a popular mandate for the new team of leaders to move rapidly to achieve energy security.

Along with the question Congressman Conyers asked earlier today - ""Is your family ready to pay $10,000 for Bush's war?":

A follow-up question could be - "Do you realize that energy security and your ability to breath, eat, and watch your children learn and have fun have been gravely endangered by Bush and Cheney?"

3. Friedman recovered temporary lucidity with his 3/22 NYT oped on
alternative energy. They've framed alt energy as "idealistic nice try not realistic" when it could just as easily be "national security environmental survival hip to innovate and be independent"

4. I assure you "energy security" has everything to do with non-fossil ...
... fuel sources, and huge restraint in using remaining oil reserves. The fact that every leader, from the White House to Mayors and City Councils of the smallest towns in America are not making that reality clear to each and every citizen is lethal.

5. "If the US continues with its current policies, the next decades ...
... will be marked by war, economic collapse, and environmental catastrophe. Resource depletion and population pressures are about to catch up with us, and no one is prepared. The political elites, especially in the US, are incapable of dealing with the situation and have in mind a punishing game of "Last One Standing."

The alternative is "Powerdown," a strategy that will require tremendous effort and economic sacrifice in order to reduce per-capita resource usage in wealthy countries, develop alternative energy sources, distribute resources more equitably, and reduce the human population humanely but systematically over time. While civil society organizations push for a mild version of this, the vast majority of the world's people are in the dark, not understanding the challenges ahead, nor the options realistically available.

Powerdown speaks frankly to these dilemmas. Avoiding cynicism and despair, it begins with an overview of the likely impacts of oil and natural gas depletion and then outlines four options for industrial societies during the next decades:

Last One Standing: the path of competition for remaining resources;

Powerdown: the path of cooperation, conservation and sharing;

Waiting for a Magic Elixir: wishful thinking, false hopes, and denial;

Building Lifeboats: the path of community solidarity and preservation.

Finally, the book explores how three important groups within global society-the power elites, the opposition to the elites (the antiwar and antiglobalization movements, et al: the "Other Superpower"), and ordinary people-are likely to respond to these four options. Timely, accessible and eloquent, Powerdown is crucial reading for our times.

Many do have a clue; some are eloquent in expressing it. These are the people whom must be quickly brought to positions of leadership.

6. I hope I don't sound biased but
I agree that Bush's handling of our energy needs is one more grounds, in a long list, for impeachment. And that includes his attempt to pretend that global warming is a non-issue.

The problem is that since he has been in office the criteria bar for impeachment has risen so high that it is hard to imagine how anyone could possibly reach that bar.
